Puppy shoots Florida man, deputies say
Dog put paw on gun's trigger as owner tried to kill himThe Associated Press
Updated: 3:52 p.m. ET Sept. 9, 2004PENSACOLA, Fla. - A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver’s trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn’t find them a home, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies — one in his arms and another in his left hand — when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff’s report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford’s home, said sheriff’s Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

No charges leveled against the pup presumably.

What are the odds huh? Oh well, what comes around goes around, must have finally been his turn! Ha! Ha! Ha! Maybe he will learn to spay his bee-ach in the future. It makes for more loyal & happier pets! More importantly, no unwanted puppys. People need to plan ahead, I'll bet the $40.00 for sterilizing his femail seems pretty cheap compared to what he's looking at now!! Ha Ha Ha!

Poor marksmanship?

No, seriously though, immediately after posting this I began to brood. I think I leaped to judgment of this.

What if this guy does love his dogs, to distraction.
With all the hurricane damage, perhaps he has lost his job, his home, any way to provide food...maybe he is not lucky to have a computer, or electricity, and he does not have access to any help agencies.
Maybe the local shelter is corrupt, sells dogs for research, or there is dogfighting in the area, and dogs from the pound have shown up as "training" victims.

Would I have shot my little puppies? To save them starvation and terror? Yeah, I suppose that would be the braver thing.
Now if this guy was just lazy, or his girl left him and this was his way of lashing out, absolutely they should charge the pup with unfinished tasks..
I feel bad for the three little ones found.
I said on the Vip side, this reminds me of "the Yearling."
The floods, the backwards way of solving a problem, because some people just don't ever get to figure things out. They just kind of bash their way thru life, and it is a mystery why they were put here. Such misery.

On to what I do know , I can pray for all the people, esp. kids, to be safe and reunited with their pets. I am kind of writing a lot more than I need to cause this story got to me, but I bet you can tell, I lived next to a big macho...person like this as a kid, and I had a lot of uncertainity as to whether the rent would be paid, what would happen next. It left me with a devout wish that those who should be protected, would be directed to help, and that every time I could help, I'd get a Providential nudge.
So, far, that is the one thing I am proud of in my life. I have paid attention to the nudge, but I read a story like this, and I think, wow, Pd, you really could do a lot more.

I don't think he will hanging out listening to what people are saying about him at the local pub, either.

But; did you hear-- no, this is true, I posted it before.

There was a guy.
In Florida.
With a gun.
In a trailer park.
Working on his Trans-Am.

Swear! I am not making this up.

He was trying to fit a bigger exhaust pipe on his car, but his drill would not pierce the metal.
So he was frustrated, and hot.
Suddenly, he had a bright idea!
He went inside his trailer, and got his Magnum. Resolving to shoot a large enough hole in the assembly of said pipe.
He put the pipe on the ground between his feet to hold it steady, lowered the gun to thigh level for better aim.
He fired. And promptly started screaming in pain, because---
the bullet not only did not pierce the pipe, it ricocheted right off and up, into his, umm, testicular area.
He was taken to the hospital, treated, and eventually released, but the doctor treating him was chastised, because when the reporters following this story asked all that he thought, he assessed the victim's condition
and then added:
"Thank God this man can no longer breed!"
Darwinism in the flesh, ladies and gentlemen.

This brings up the whole "Darwin Award" thing.

One was something like,
These guys are in a car and their headlights stopped working, gosh darn, blown fuse. Put a .22 cartridge in, and the lights worked! Good Job!
20 minutes later got his balls shot off!

Brilliant!

Dude here in town attempted to rip off an ATM machine about a year or so ago. Wrapped a logging chain around it, attached the chain to the rear bumper of his truck and peeled out. Ripped the bumper right off his truck. Freaked him out and he fled. Leaving the bumper, ATM, chain and HIS LICENSE PLATE.

Cops were waiting for him when he got home.

Prettyday..You're way kinder than me. He could afford a gun and bullets. I'm glad he got shot. The nice thing is that this man will hopefully never be allowed to own an animal again, and the pups that survived will get great loving homes. Like someone said,if you love your pet, get it spayed or neutered.(unless you plan to breed responsibly)

i agree with you, lailajo. i don't know, i take this so personally. i love dogs, mine are as dear as children to me. i'd never shoot my kids if i weren't able to take care of them. i'd rather die! gyspy (4 years old) and casey (15 years old) are both spayed and neutered respectively and they are both extremely happy. hell, they eat better than us! honestly, between them, the 2 birds and the cat (and charley, the angelfish) i spend more on them than i do on myself. please don't flame me, but i'm glad that guy got shot! now, excuse me, i have to go hug my fuzzy friends.

LOL... Don't have to go far in this world to find incredible acts of just plain 'stupidness'.

But I think that's it also good that the puppy affair crossed the fence in your mind several times.
It's easy to just accept something in the media as it's presented.
Without much thought as to 'not judging unless we stand it the shoes of that person'.
Which I would have done had it not been for your own counter reply. Thanks...

ok, ok, ok i'm sorry but this story is really starting to bother me. if i couldn't take care of my innocent charges, i would do everything humanly possible to make certain that they would be cared for. after all, they are my responsibility. i would sell my car, my computer, my precious prs guitars, my GUN, i'd beg and borrow, anything! i'd starve myself! i would search till my dying days until i could find homes for them, and even if all my resources were exhausted, shooting them would be out of the question. even in our enlightened society, mass murderers and serial killers are humanely given the lethal injection. firing squads are part of regimes the likes of saddam's. from experience, i know that dogs, even young dogs, especially intelligent ones such as the shepard mixes, know more about what's going on than many people give them credit for. i am still constantly being surprised by their level of compassion and intelligence.

prettyday, my dear, i just want you to know that i honestly and genuinely respect your opinion. i have read many of your posts and find you to be a very caring and wonderful person. and i really do appreciate your very thoughtful posts. thank you. i'm just mad at the guy that shot his puppies. now, i have to hug my little ones again.

I agree with Angel. You are great prettyday, and you show great compassion. I just can't be as big as you. I love animals too much. My dog is my child because I have no human ones. It just hurts my heart when animals are hurt.

Well, if the pup lives in a "three strikes and your out" state and has a couple of priors, it could be in big trouble...

Makes me mad too! There are a few people where I live that have farm dogs & they love them as much as anybody. When their time comes usually the farmer takes matters in their own hands, I don't like it but at least I can understand it. If a dog is suffering then you are doing it a favor, however I have never nor could I ever do it myself! My last crippled dog I had to take it to the vet for euthanasia. I had to go in the day before to prepay for the proceedure, (my choice). That way I wouldn't have to speak to anyone the next day, I couldn't because I was just blubbering like a little kid. That was 4 years ago & I still get teary eyed when I think about it.

Anyhow, my point was that I can somewhat understand why farmers take matters into there own hands when it is inevidable, (some of them cry too) I just dont know where they get the strenght to do it. I am actually very poor, but I would always find a way for someone to put them to sleep rather than have me or a friend do it the "hard" way. Somehow it seems disrespectful to me, they are my family & I couldn't do it to grandma either JMO

If u can't afford to spay or neuter your pet, you shouldn't have pets.
Euthanasia by way of a bullet ??

No. It's wrong and illegal and cruel.

The guy got what he deserved. Actually, if the bullet was aimed a bit lower, and I'll stop there, --that would have been more deserving.

This guy is scum. No ifs, ands, or buts.

There is no justification for what he did. No way.

Let me at him, he'll run away screaming, I guarantee it.

MorningSun/PrettyDay- I love ya, and u are a sweetheart, but there's a time to call a spade a spade.
