I am about to go to Canada this weekend and I was wondering, since some meds are illegal there......can you take you own meds with your name on the bottle across the boarder no problem, or are they goingt o give me greif.
I have hydro 10/500 and am wondering if I am goingt to be able to take them with me. This must be a very stupid question, but I have never crossed the boarder, and really want to make sure I can take my meds, thanks for any help anyone offers it will definatly be appreciated. Thanks BD

I took my hydro with me to Mexico without any problems. Though, I didn't get stopped by customs, I *believe* as long as it's a prescription, then it's all fine and dandy. Don't quote me on that, though

I have gone to Toronto twice in the past 6 months (both by car) and have had no problems with customs officials either time. Actually, they never asked about my medications. I took a bottle of lortab and Soma (also blood pressure meds) and all in original bottles, so no problems there. Also, I brought back a bottle of Tylenol 222's (8 mg codeine product) with no issue.

By the way Hydrocodone is not illegal in Canada. It is just hardly ever Rx'd. Only as a cough suppressant. Some of the other narcs seem to be more readily Rx'd for pain. Ussually get Percocet for something you would get Lortabs for in U.S.

Thought I'd try to bring this thread back up to date. I posted in the open forum, but I need more info.
I am flying to Montreal next Tuesday. I will have my usual meds with me. ( hydro, soma, bp meds, colesterol and the like) I can't have a problem with customs! My questions are few. Is there something else I can get over the counter for hubby's back pain besides 222's? Hubby has a slight problem with asprin and anti-inflamitories like me. We both need cough medicine with codiene occasionally. Can we get that over the counter, and what is it called there? I can't speak french, so I'm worried about communication. Okay, now the silly question. What is the weather like up there this time of year? I live on the Gulf of Mexico and we are in the summer season already. I know it will be cooler, but is it really cold still? Gonna be tough on the aches and pains.
Peace and less pain,
Deb

if you can fly to grand portage minnesota, you tell them that you are staying at grand portage casino hotel with relatives. look like a nice clean couple, and say you wish to site see & try save some money on specific items cuz you know you can save about %30 on most items. You are looking on lake superor for lake trout & salmon, becuse it is some thing you have alwas planned to do. Tell them you never fished in lake superior and you want to do so some time. buy some grocries that you find hard to get in texas. also get the stuff you need and come back home. try to answer his questions with only one of you unless the question is directet towards the other. remain calm, polite & patient. bring back some canadian beef because you heard its better than texas beef. they will confiscate it from you, and feel they have done there good deed for the day. you can tell them you are going to try your luck at gambling again.
make sure you cross at the pigeon river border. they are easy there & with this type of story i have never been checked. remember to keep your cool put your product in asprin bottles from USA. they need to look worn some not new!!!
just in case they catch you. however if you also are site seeing and shopping. they will let you thru. They will ask you questions that you need to answer truthfully. remain calm, show them your driver licenses, and they know you came to grand portage to visit relatives & are staying with relatives at grand portage casino because you like to gamble too. you just wanted to visit canada cuz you have never beeen there before.
you dont need all of this to get thru. usually 3 or 4 questions and your gone.
most importantly, you are on your vacation on the minnesota side.
as long as you look like a loving couple having fun this will work.
you dont need to use every thing i gave you, you can improvise. buy some beef & admit you did they will confiscate it at the border, then they will feel they have done their job well.
this has worked for me every time at the pigeon river border and i spose it will work for you too!!
good luck,
Larry

Hello all,
I live in Vermont about 30 minutes from the border and was recently prescribed Adderall XR 20mg. I don't have insurance and the cost is really getting to me. I've tried to decipher the FDA and Customs regulations regarding Purchasing CII's in canada and bringing them back... but to be honest, it all just seems like a lot of doublespeak. I'm hoping someone here has a good understanding of what is okay and what is not. A family friend has told me that her doctor in canada will sometimes take patients from the US for a brief doctors visit as long as it is accompanied by all the right medical records from the US. If I have my script from the US, then one from a Canadian Dr. will that be cool?
Thank you in advance,
JP

This is a tiny bit off topic, but still concerns traveling to foreign countries with prescription drugs. Oddly, in Greece codeine is HIGHLY ILLEGAL. You can waltz through customs with your prescription for dilaudid, morphine, oxycodone, etc. But if you have codeine, even in a prescription bottle from your doctor with your name on it ... even with a copy of your prescription ... you WILL be arrested and charged.
With the Olympics in full swing, a lot of foreigners will be traveling to Athens. Even ONE Tylenol-3 will get you arrested there. Very strange, but true.

If you are that close to the border, and it is a major crossing. Just go to the US customs office at the border and ask for information on what you want to do. You will have better luck finding out if its legal. If they say it is and you are still not sure get their card. I was so worried the first time I bought OTC codine.I stopped on my way in and asked. The guy said one bottle per person no count. And declare it. I said are you sure he then seemed amused and gave me his card. I have only done this a few times and I always tell them and only once did they even ask to see them. But you are in another area, If it is important take the time, make sure and do it right.

Anybody entering Canada with a controlled susbtance needs the original bottle and intact label with a written script from the ordering Dr, on amount and usage.
Now that is the written law, not sure the rule of thumb the customs use I would imagine it depends if it's one of the high profile meds how sticky they are.

It makes me think of the time I had to eat an apple when I got off the cruise ship in Florida. And when 9-11 was still fresh, the National Guard made me drink my entire Dr. Pepper before I could get on the plane. Southwest took away my tiny nail clippers. Security made me throw away a small Ziploc of beach sand from Hawaii. Boy, we are really down on those dangerous apples, sand, clippers and Dr. Peppers in this country. No one has ever said anything about my medicine, though.
If I had been in Greece with one codeine tablet, I think I could swig it down with a Dr. Pepper and not get caught!!! Just joking. Interesting though...
