I was just wondering if anyone has had any good results using Bextra. My Neuro gave me a few boxes to try, quite honestly I have not really given it a really good chance yet but I wanted to see how others have done with it.The couple times I did take it,it made my stomach feel kind of strange so I discontinued and just kept up with my other meds.Is this drug supposed to be an Ultram type of med or what? I looked up info, but wanted to hear some opinions in laymans terms. Thanks so much for all your help............take care and be well all..........wren'

Hey there,
I've taken a trial of this, but it doesn't work for me. Though, I don't suffer from arthritis or arthritic type pain. That's it main use. I have a girl friend who takes it and it works wonders for her- but her pains are brought on by monthly girlie things Anyhow- different things work for different people and different problems. If your doctor told you to give it a chance, I would. Good luck.

the MD gave to me when I had some POST OP pain tried to sell me that it is a new generation of nsaids. I truly gave it try because I had nothing else to take after 6 days i stopped bcause 1. it made my stomach burn all the time second it did nothing for the pain.
IMO worthless for anything but what is was made for arthritic pain

well they (the pharmacuetical companies) marketed bextra's effectiveness as a second generation selective cox-2 inhibitor. The purpose of these drugs as opposed to non-selective (cox-1 + cox-2) nsaids was to allow the body to continue to produce PGE or prostaglandin E. PGE works to line the stomach with mucous and thus protect it from HCL induced ulcers. However, the medical literature has shown that these "new and improved selective" cox-2 inhibitors are not as "selective" as they had first hoped and the risk of GI bleed with chronic use is still quite high. Having said that, the 1-2 a day dosing when compared to 4x a day w/ ibuprofen does cut down on morbidity.

HI all, I jusy wanted to say thanks to those that posted to my question.I did tell my neuro I hadn't been taking it,because I didn't want to deal with stomach problems as well as all the other things I have to deal with.Unfortunatly anything stronger than tylenol seems to tear my stomach up.Ibuprophen will leave me doubled over and asprin will make me pray for a swift death!!! Ok little dramatic but you get the idea!from what I gather no one has had much relief with these,I guess that is why they prescribed them along with other pain med and muscle relaxants.I frankly don't understand why many of the things are prescribed anyway, like why muscle relaxants for herniated discs???? Oh well just rambling here,I am having a pretty bad day for pain, herniated discs hurts down to my foot and I have a cervical headache, you know the kind you feel like you are wearing a Best if kept off the board on your head!!!except I don't feel much like a princess in flannels and bunny slippers!!! LOL..anyway thanks again and maybe I will try them again today! have a great week-end everybuddy! Wren'

My PM doc prescribed Bextra about 6 months ago for coxxyx pain and I must say it works well for me. I did find that I had to take it 3 x per day for 7 days or so before I found any relief. BTW it is very expensive (ie. 10 tablets for about $40).
The problem is my insurance company's NOT wanting to pay for them. They claim that it is for menstural cramps and will only cover 10 tablets per month! SO, I make do with Bextra, Rx Motrin and breakthrough meds.
