Almost every winter I get a very bad case of bronchitis, and the only thing that helps me is Tussionex. But I have seen another medication mentioned "Hycodan" and am wondering if it is similar to Tussionex?
I hope I don't need any kind of this medicine this winter (it tastes awful!) but I am just trying to plan ahead just incase. All input from anyone who is familiar with the above two meds is greatly appreciated!!

I am not 100% positive but I believe that Hycodan has less Hydrocodone per dose than Tussionex does. I believe Tussionex has 10mg per dose and that Hycodan has 5mg per dose.

Tussionex contains hydrocodone polystirex (sp) which is supposedly equivalent to 10 mg hydrocodone bitartrate, the ingredient in hycodan syrup, which has 5 mg per teaspoon. Tussionex also has chlorpheneramine, an antihistamine, and hycodan does not. Hycodan also contains homatropine methylbromide, which is somehow supposed to prevent abuse of the drug by making it unpleasant.

The MAJOR difference between tussionex and other cough suppressants containing hydrocodone, is that tussionex is time released, designed to give 12 hours of relief. This is whay there is more mg per teaspoon it enters the bloodstream a lot more slowly. For bad coughs this medication is THE BOMB, especially if you find yourself coughing all night long, or only getting 4-5 hours of relief from other meds. In my experience, if you're truely coughing up a storm, Dr's don't seem to have a problem with writing a script for this. Also, a wonderful side effect is that it works great for pain, it's too bad Dr's won't RX it for that purpose, because it greatly reduces the number of doses one has to take.

I have a friend who gets upper respir spelling, she gets infections every winter as well and she even has had them in the summer, her Dr always gave her amox w/ tussionex. It is an awful thing to see her when she is sick. She can't stop coughing between converstaions. She has asked me if there are any Op's that offer it. I have searched and can't find any.
Has anyone had an OP lately that offers it. She is not a member, but if I could help her as she just moved and does not have a new Dr yet and new job, she has a waiting period on health ins.
I know what you mean about the nagging cough...she is a good friend and I know and see what she goes through.
Any Op offer Tussionex, she must have the records, she has gone through it every year for atleast 5 years( hoe long I have known her)
Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

Since the active ingredient is hydrocodone (cough suppressant) you could achieve relief taking it in pill form, and if that was not enough add some generic benadryl-it is also a cough suppressant and maybe some generic sudafed.
Just a thought. If cost isn't a concern the Tussionex would do fine. So would the Hycodan. I guess it is a matter of preference.
