Clonidine helps with opiate withdrawal symptoms in general and it's an antihypertensive. But if you're already taking blood pressure medication you probably should not add clonidine unless you really know what you're doing.

I think that the reason so many of us are quitting or tapering now has to do with the change in the season and end of summer. It's easier to make a lifestyle change when the climate changes.
