I just had to reply, as I am going through nursing school and have worked in a few hospitals.
RN's don't have access to Schedule I meds, as those have no medical use whatsoever. They have access to Schedule II meds, though, and usually there are many security factors in place to make sure no one "steals".
Now, I worked in three hospitals, and saw only one person steal. He was getting a patients morphine out of the Pyxis (a big machine that holds all meds securely), and instead of taking just 1 amp out, he took 8 out and kept some for himself. Stupidly, he forgot, it shows on the "receipt" who used the Pyxis and what they were getting OUT of the machine, and HE was the one getting the morphine. He was subsequently arrested after he confessed to taking it.
Now, nurses ARE human, and a few of them are addicted - it is no surprise there. It happens, and usually they are caught. I could never, in good conscience, steal a patient's pain med or anything, and I am not sticking up for the "bad apples". They get caught eventually, and what comes around goes around.
More and more hospitals are recognizing this fact and putting better security measures in place for this.
Just my 2 cents,
Skylark
