Contrary to what many here seem to believe, there is no federal law on "double dipping." The state laws vary widely. My state has no such law per se, but it makes it illegal to use an alias, provide any false information, or conceal a material fact, in order to obtain a controlled substance. That's the entire law in a nutshell.
So if a doctor (or web site) asks you what you're taking ... and you don't tell all ... i guess that could be considered an illegal act. And it doesn't matter if the OP is out of state ... the act of filling out that form or talking on the phone to a doctor occurs here.
But if the doctor doesn't ask, is it "concealing a material fact" to not mention it? That's the part that's vague.
The intent was to go after people who use multiple fake names and see multiple doctors for the same drug ... and they keep the other prescriptions a secret. It's obviously illegal to use a fake name.
We have electronic prescription monitoring, but it only applies to C-IIs that are sold in-state. Every once in a while they bust someone at an emergency room for going in for a Demerol shot or something and claiming a migraine when he just got treated for it down the street at a different hospital.
But mostly they use it to catch croakers. (Read Naked Lunch if you don't know what a croaker is.) They hardly ever use it against small-time users.
Some states have much more strict and specific laws. Mine doesn't.
