Is the hub in LaFayette the final hub a package stops at before going out for delivery to your home/office/whatever? If so you might be in business. But if its a big hub where many packages go from there to the little local hubs and then out for delivery, you might have a hard time getting someone to try and look through the tons of packages that go through there. You see, if it is just a connecting hub, and from there packages go to different towns, well then thousands upon thousands of packages have to go through there en route to their final destinations. But like I said, if it is the final local hub, where the package would be put onto a truck for delivery to your address, then you may be able to pick it up there before its scheduled delivery. But even so, like everyone said - its UPS policy that a first delivery attempt must be made before you can pick it up at the Hub. Some places, such as the hub in my town, may be more flexible with this policy. What I would do is go to the hub early in the morning, like 8am or 8:30am, because the packages do not go out for delivery until 8:45 or 9:00am in my area. This may be different for each hub also, depending on what time drivers must leave to be able to deliver all the packages on their truck. But I would stop by early in the morning and just say that I won't be around or it was accidently sent to the wrong address, and then ask if I could pick it up before it went out. And 100% of the time, I would be able to get it. I think you should have an excuse though, and not just say that you want to pick it up then because you felt like it. Come up with something that would be convenient for them and you - such as the wrong address or you won't be around in the day. Then it profits them as much as you to get it out of the way in lieu of them having to try to deliver then bring it back or having it get mixed up because of a wrong address.
Again, though, this is probably dependant on the hub and if the people there are flexible and if its a connecting hub(many many packages) or the final destination hub(packages for the local area-where they'll be put on a truch for delivery). The 1-800 number will only get you a CS rep who'll tell you the policy of first attempts and won't try and make things convenient for you. They're by the book on the nation CS level because if they aren't, then everyone is going to want to have special circumstances and it'll just be hell for them. Your best bet is to stop by there either the night before and alert them to what you want to do -(at the hub) - or stop early in the morning.
