The other problem with methadone (besides it turning you into a zombie) is that the w/d's last a really long time. Even if you reduce down, you still have w/d's. I had a friend who was on it for 3 years and then slowely reduced down her dose and quit. She was sick for about 2 weeks (like the first 3 days of hydro withdrawal), and had a hard time sleeping for about a month. I think as long as someone switched to a less powerful narcotic (i.e. codiene) for a few weeks after coming off the methadone, it wouldn't be too bad though.
