Vistaril is an antihistamine (also known as hydroxyzine), but it's prescribed for sleep/anxiety because it has sedative properties. It's kind of like taking a Benadryl (OTC), and never worked well for me. I'm also an insomniac, and if unmedicated I'll sleep every other night or so. I had a little success with Ambien, but it had some visual distortions as side effects that I found intolerable. It definitely helps as far as the insomnia, and doesn't directly affect your appetite, but some people find they binge after taking Ambien and don't remember in the morning. Ambien is an attractive choice because it isn't chemically addictive, stays in the body a short time (8-10 hours?), and isn't supposed to cause a tolerance.
