I have chronic depression. At one point I thought it was affecting my job performance so I got a note from my doc stating I had this illness and gave it to my boss. When a new manager tried to fire me I brought up the doctor's note. He was unable to get rid of me because of ADA (Americans with disabilities Act). SO, yes, depression is an illness and your friend would have been 'saved' had she pushed this fact. Sorry to hear she has the opinion that she's not ill.
