I think it's great that you're on the board, hearing what people's real experiences are with physicians, and learning the utter frustration most of us go through with our doctors. I think hearing this from people will, in fact, add to your overall understanding and compassion as a doctor.

My ex-girlfriend is about finished applying to medical schools, and having seen what both I and her other ex-boyfriend have gone through with chronic pain has been a real eye-opener for her. She has never experienced it in her own life, and could have gone all the way through med school with a very limited understanding of what chronic pain means to people on a daily basis, which would have probably turned her into one of those docs who won't prescribe pain meds. Now, though, she DOES understand. In a real way. You can't sit with your boyfriend in the ER night after night with him doubled over in agony without really understanding that PAIN IS REAL.

I might add that her most recent lover was an ex-heroin addict who shared with her what his life used to be like. Instead of becoming judgemental and uptight about it, she chose to do some of her pre-med school community service working for the local Needle Exchange program, doing harm reduction. I have no doubt that will further increase her compassion and understanding as a doctor. I think she'll be a great doc. Hell, I wish she was mine!
