The correct term is endodontics preformed by an endodontist who specializes in root canals as the original poster said. A dentist who specializes in gum disease is called a periodontist.
As an answer to the posters question, no the tissue will not regrow. Once gum issue has receded the best you can do is to halt the progression and if necessary have a skin graft done to cover the exposed area. There are numerous reasons why the tissue has worn away from an abcess around the injured tooth to even age progression. That is why it is so important to use proper techniques and hygiene to keep the gum tissue as healthy and pink as you can.
Your best option is to talk in depth to your dentist and ask him what can be done. They didnt see anything on the xrays because tissue can not be xrayed. Dont worry, as long as you keep the area clean and brush it gently, it will not get any worse before your appointment. Just remember to bring it up with your Dr. so he is aware of how important it is to you.
Good luck
Dixie
