The effects of benzos, especially valium, have been researched for years, compared to the SSRIs. The medical establishment knows far more about both their benefits and drawbacks. As far as antidepressants go, I was a little lab rat, like a lot of us, and the results were unexpected. I could go on and on, but there are enough nightmare stories about SSRIs on the internet for anyone who scratches beneath the surface.
They're so heavily promoted by the pharmaceutical companies, and the side effects are downplayed to point of absurdity.
I think in years to come more will come out about the dangers of ADs, and they'll be looked upon as yet another misguided attempt by psychiatry to "cure" those who don't fit into society, or who are chronically unhappy, delusional, suicidal, etc.
I've just learned I'd rather put my mental health into my own hands, since I know my own mind better than any GP. I should have been suspicious when my GP took ten minutes to evaluate me and prescribe me Prozac when I was 18 years old, which made me manic and suicidal, when all I'd been was mildly depressed. Prozac was a horrible drug for me, but for some it works.
Luvox helped relieve my anxiety but it also turned me into an emotional zombie. I had no ability to cry, and no capacity for joy.

If I have a heart attack, I'll gladly put myself into the hands of a capable doctor, but I'm keeping their hands out of my head from now on!
