The other fun thing that happens in a class action settlement is what they call a "fluid settlement". This is where, instead of offering class members cash, they offer coupons or discounts on future purchases. It's great for the sued company because they often pay way less that the settlement amount. For example, I am part of an AT&T Wireless class and am due around $30. I get a choice of a coupon on a new phone or gadgets. Not surprisingly, I haven't been a customer for years...so not compensation for me.
Of course, any class member has the option to opt out of the class and pursue your own judgment...Bad idea if you're only out a few bucks.
