Halcion is a mild sleep aid, and Ambien is a lot stronger.
Actually, proper triazolam is a muchstronger sedative/hypnotic than what is sold as Ambien in the US. (I've found zolpidem tartrate from Europe to be more powerful, though still probably not as powerful as triazolam). Unfortunately, quality control for brand name manufacturers outside the US and Western Europe is often not what it should be. Additionally, of the 3 generics for Halcion commonly stocked in the US ( Geneva; Purepac, (Watson); and Greenstone) only the 3rd one actually reflects the drug's legend as the insomniac's best friend. I'm assuming this is because the manufacturers of the 1st 2 generics took the liberty of including -20% active ingredient, and the 3rd either included the proper dosage of active ingredient or went a little over.
(I believe someone on DB once quoted a pharmacist relative as saying that manufacturers of generics are legally permitted to deviate up to 20% from the brand's active listed dose.)
At any rate, it's likely your experience has something to with with one of the variables I mentioned above. In present day when short acting barbiturates are no longer prescribed for sleep, period, triazolam is the most powerful sleeping medication available in the US. (Flunitrazepam is more popular the world over) Ambien is one of the least potent drugs prescribed for sleep in the US. All body chemistries differ, of course, but from a purely scientific standpoint what I say above is true.
Still, it's good to know (unfortunate for you though!) that the triazolam from HLM is weak. I remember the dreadful, dreadful night after I went to refill my Halcion script and the pharmacy had run out of Greenstone and switched to Geneva. Then, when I went to complain, they ordered in Purepac ! My mind was perfectly open at the time--it was only after these experiences that I developed my anti-Geneva, anti-Purepac stance. But the problem was not with the drug.
It was the manufacturer.
If you are still looking for a sleeping pill, you might want to give Flurazepam a try. It's pretty high up there with triazolam. Good luck.
