In my opinion, there are better options than demerol. Dem. seems to be short acting, and dosn't take care of the pain as well as other oral drugs (Hydro, oxy, even larger doses of codeine). If you have poor kidney function, demerol's metabolites will build up in your system and cause seizures. Demerol was actually developed with the intent of having a lower potential of abuse (less euphoria) than morphine. It seems all they have developed is a crappy analgesic. In my experience demerol is most often given for post-operative pain, usually orthopedic surgeries. The usual dose is 75-100mg IM, and is usually mixed with 25-50mg of vistaril (hydroxyzine). If given IV, the usual dose for pain is anywhere 12.5 -50mg, with the average dose being 25mg. But keep in mind that this will be very short acting (about an hour of analgesia). If you live in the UK, I would look for dihydroCODEINE. I'm sure you have probably tried this, but I think you'll have better luck with an oral agent like this than Demerol. BTW, Demerol is a CII drug in the USA, and I havn't seen it anywhere online. If you need some stronger oral agents, PM me for sources that I think will ship to you.
