Demerol is usually very difficult to obtain from your own personal physician because many physicians have this notion (mistaken in my opinion) that Demerol is much more addicting than other pain medications like Hydrocodone. They (the drs.) think that people get more euphoria from Demerol and if you ask for it for pain, most drs. look at you with raised eyebrows! I think it is a widely-disseminated myth that Demerol is better than other pain meds. I have had to have quite a bit of Demerol in post-op situations (the one situation in which drs. will more often prescribe it) and have received injections as well as pills to take home after surgery. I think Roxycodone is a better pain reliever with fewer side effects. One benefit of Demerol for some folks (e.g., my mother) is that it doesn't seem to cause as much nausea. Codeine, hydrocodone, and morphine all make my Mom violently nauseated with vomiting. (But some people get nauseated from Demerol, too, so I think it is really an individual thing.)

Oh, I just remembered something else: My orthopedic surgeon told me that he doesn't like to prescribe Demerol because he thinks people develop a tolerance more quickly plus there is a build-up in the bloodstream of a metabolite of Demerol which is quite unpleasant.
