LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Singer-actress Courtney Love pleaded innocent to two felony drug counts involving prescription pain killers stemming from a response by Beverly Hills police to her home last October, court sources said. Love is charged with one count each of possession of hydrocodone and oxycodone. She contends she has prescriptions for the pills and her lawyer said he expected the charges to be dropped. On April 15, Beverly Hills Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox found sufficient evidence to require the 39-year-old widow of grunge rocker Kurt Cobain to stand trial. A pretrial hearing is set for June 4. Earlier this month, defense attorney Michael Rosenstein accused prosecutors of "turning this into a circus and a witch hunt.
"We've indicated to the district attorney's office that Miss Love has had prescriptions for all of the medicine that's been seized," Rosenstein said. "I couldn't imagine what the district attorney's intent is here, other than to make an example out of Miss Love." Love is charged separately in Los Angeles with one misdemeanor count each of being under the influence of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct. That case, in which a hearing is set for Monday, stems from her arrest by Los Angeles police last Oct. 2 -- reportedly at her ex-boyfriend's house -- a few hours before Beverly Hills officers went to her residence.
