In terms of strength, Codeine is a 'lesser' product than Hydro. (100mg of Codeine = about 10mg of Hydro. But you'll literally fall on your face asleep at that dosage, unless you have a high tolerance to Codeine.) I've used both extensively and found that Hydro works much better than Codeine, and without leaving me as sleepy either. All pain meds also have a side effect of making you constipated to one degree or another. Codiene is pretty bad for that. Hydro will also block you up some, but not to the same extent as Codeine. If you do find yourself blocked, add either add a granola type cereal to your diet, or granola bars. And try to wash down your meds with at least a full (8oz) of water too. Exercise helps as well to keep everyting moving along as it should. Not hard core jogging or anything that drastic, but a brisk 30 min walk, (and I do mean brisk, not just dawdling along like you have all day), has pretty much the same effect. In the past (when I was in a relationship) I found the walks also helped as my partner would often walk with me and we could talk about whatever may be worrying us at home or at work. A very pleasant side effect of taking up walking. With the weather hopefully improving soon (as in the arrival of Spring), talking a brisk walk is no real chore. (It can take some motivation to go walking when it is barely 40 outside....and more so for those folks who live in snowy areas!)
Hope this helps you understand the difference between Codeine and Hydro.
