codiene can be really hard on your stomach. Codiene on an empty stomach often causes nausea and vomiting/pain. Once in my misbegotten youth, a freind gave me a tylenol # 3 for a headache. I took it with a cup of coffee. Got to work and was having terrible stomach pains. Called the ER told the doc what was happening and he said and I quote "go take some malaox and don't do anything that stupid again. Allways eat food before taking codiene". I slunk off to the office got some malox and was fine as soon as it hit my stomach.
