A man was arrested after a pharmacist foiled his attempt to procure a drug by using a fake prescription.

Ricardo Bretto, 47, of West Barnstable, is facing charges of uttering a false prescription, forgery, and obtaining a drug by fraud.

Police said Bretto entered the Stop & Shop Superstore's pharmacy on Middle Street just after 10:30 a.m. Sunday and gave the pharmacist a prescription for the painkiller, Darvocet. The pharmacist became suspicious when he recognized the doctor's name on the prescription as having been used on previous fraudulent prescriptions.

When the pharmacist told Bretto he could not fill the order, the suspect left the store and drove away in a white BMW. The pharmacist called police and gave them a description of the vehicle.

Within a few minutes, an officer spotted the car and stopped it. Bretto was taken into custody.

Bretto was held in the police station lockup overnight without bail and entered a not guilty plea when arraigned Monday in Quincy District Court. He faces a hearing at a later date.
