10 mg. codeine equals (approx.) 0.3 - 0.6 hydrocodone, according to the MediCalc calculator. Be sure to change administration "Route" to "PO" in both fields. In the other calculator recommended by kjb, 10 mg. equates to about .5 mg hydrocodone, given a cross tolerance reduction of 50%. I think it's important to note at globalrph.com's site, there is a nice little explanation of the inaccuracy of these calculators. Click on the "?" next to the tolerance field to read.
So, it would seem that it takes about 200 mg. codeine to approximate about 5 mg. hydrocodone, or Vicodin. Thatsa' lot of codeine intake in one dose. I'd expect you'd have severe BM problems at that dosage level.
And, that's another reason hydrocodone is so popular--but it's more addictive and the withdrawal more uncomfortable.
For moderate pain, codeine phosphate or sulfate and dihyrocodeine (DHC), the strongest of the codeine family (IMO), do well, especially DHC. But for severe to killer pain, hydro's the way to go. With some APAP added, codeine's analgesia can be increased, as with the venerable Tylenol w/Codeine line (esp., #3).
I prefer oxycodone, though, over all of 'em, but it's virtually unavailable via the net OPs.
Nice dreams,
