When I filled my methadone today (again written without a DEA # on the script) I asked the pharmacist about this.

The response was that my doctor practices medicine less than 5 miles from the pharmacy I use (Target) and is a known doctor in the area. He said that if I tried to fill the prescription 20 miles away, and if that doctor was not already in their system, they probably wouldn't accept the prescription without the DEA# on it.

Just another perspective to this interesting issue.
