In layman's terms, dependence and addiction can take on the same definition. In the medical field, they are two different things. Yes, all chronic pain patients WILL develop tolerance and dependance if they continously take narcotics. However, you are correct in that studies show that few CPers develop addiction. I have my own doubts, as these studies involve too many subjective variables to be able to prove anything. For the purpose of this thread, I won't get into that.

But, you are right... studies do "show" that people who are given adequate round the clock access to painkillers are less likely to become addicted than undertreated patients.

As for your question regarding where I got my definitions... I got them mostly from my addictions course. If I can dig up my old notes, I may be able to transcribe or fax them to you.

I do know that undertreatment of pain is much too common these days, but it's very hard to practice medicine the way you would like, with the DEA breathing down your neck. I firmly believe that the majority of these poor undertreated individuals know their body, they know what works and what they need. They are not out-of-control druggies or devious drug diverters. Those that are, are surprisingly easy to spot. It's just the government that really makes it a problem to have a generous pad. I'm quite trusting of the folks on DB, and even made the offer to fix a member up with a script or two. Unfortunately, soon after that, I became flooded with PMs asking me for scripts. I realized what a dumb mistake I had made, and had to block PMs and lay low. Yes paranoia is a tall wall to climb.
