Re: Anyone have experience with Reglan?

Wow, your experience with Reglan sounds quite similar to an experience I had with another anti- nausea med through an IV. I am not sure of the spelling, but from what I remember, it was called Compazine.

I had a really bad case of food poisoning this one time and it was so horrible that I thought I was going to die. Actually, from what I remember, I WANTED to die!!

I could not stop puking or, um, well how do I put it gracefully....um, I guess there is no way to put it gracefully so I will just say it...the projectile puking was free flowin' out of one end and at almost the exact moment, I was dealing with yet another form of body fluids being projected out of my poor traumatized body. It was HORRIBLE!

This had gone on for several hours even though I had not taken a sip of anything throughout the entire day. Even the thought of sipping on a small glass of 7-UP was to much to think about. So as you can imagine, I was getting quite dehydrated.

It felt like someone was wearing spiked shoes while doing jumping jacks on my stomach. By the time my husband got home from work I was in really bad shape. It freaked him out enough that he demanded I go to the ER. I realized that I was really sick so I had better listen to him.

When I got there they told me I was REALLY dehydrated so they were going to put me on an IV. Well, that sounded fine to me, heck, if they say I am that dehydrated then I probably am. The one thing I do know is I could barely move my head without getting really dizzy.

Then suddenly, without any warning (poor nurse) I threw up all over the place. It was SO nasty, it only consisted of yelloe bile considering i did not have anything else in me!

So, in order to stop the nausea and protect me from the dangerous effects of extreme dehydration the doctor said I needed to get something in me that would immediately stop the violent exit maneveurs that were taking place.

So....I got shot up full of Compazine (spelling?). It was so weird, because almost immediately I started to feel weird. Not just sick weird, but weird, weird. You know what I mean, I started to get dizzy and I could not get my body to relax. I wanted to rip that IV out of my arm. I literally began trying to do just that until my husband held my arms down.

I seriously felt like someone that needed to be committed into a psych ward. I could not remember little things and i kept asking the same questions over and over. It was nothing to laugh at because i actually thought I was going to die. I told my husband I could barely remember who I was and that was just the start of my memory loss.

Also, whenever someone spoke to me, I just stared at then with a blank stare. Their voices sounded like they were talking to me from inside a tunnel. I felt out of control as if I was going to rip that sucker out of my arm no matter what. My actions were quite bothersome to my husband since he knows I hate making a scene when I am at the doctor, and I always try to be a really easy and cooperative patient as I used to think being sweet and polite would guarantee superior car. Ya right!!

Well long story short here. I begged my husband to make them remove the IV and let me go home. They eventually did so, but they said they felt I was making a mistake. They seemed quite ilequipped to handle such a medication reaction which made me think I was the only person that had been effected from that compazine.

I also began having short term memory loss. It sounds almost too bizarre to be factual, but I swear this happened to me! I went home and crashed for several hours and when I woke up I felt much etter. But I swear, that was one of the worst experiences I had ever been through. I even think it was worse than my back surgery.

Since that experience 5 years ago, I always list compazine as the med I am allergic to. Still, to this day, I have no idea why i had such a negative reaction to the stuff, but I am not willing to try it again just to find out why i had the reaction that i did.

Now when I go to a new doctor and they ask for my allergies I list this one on top. It was not until several months ago that I was told by the nurse at my pain clinic that the reaction I had experiences was in fact an allergic reaction to the compazine through the IV, She even said there have been several people that had similar reactions.

As mean as it may sound, I really was relieved to find out others had also been through this. It somehow made me feel a lot less like a circus freak.

I am just surprised the hospital staff that had given me this stuff for the food poisoning did not recognize the bad reacxtion I was having. Not one person told me this mediocation has been known to cause problems in several other patients. Instead they sent me home believing I was the only freak of nature that this had happened to.

I was so scared when I got home. I felt as though I was having an out of body experience for several hours more.

Luckily, I think I was able to sleep it off. When I woke up from that nap my mind and thoughts were not as fuzzy as I had thought they would be.

I will never allow anyone to put compazine in my IV again. I think the dehydration was easier to handle than the tricks my mind was playing on me.

Since we both had been given anti nausea medicne that made us feel weird, maybe there is something that is in it that can mess with the persons mind.

I truly hope not, but at this point I have no doubt at all that even though the medical staff knows about possible negative reactions to these meds, they still will give them if they have them on hand. Not that they are just trying to be mean, but instead to attempt to get the patient out of the ER as soon as humanly possible.

Well, just know you are not alone. I would be interested to know if anyone else here at DB has had similar experiences.
