Re: Hydrocodone 7.5/750 mg Shelf Life???? [Re: Melody]

Hi,

I found 1/2 a prescription for Vicodin ES that I had been looking for about two years ago in my old shaving kit. The label says to discard after 07/15/03. My current prescriptions always say to discard one year after the date filled.
Generally, the FDA is extraordinarily cautious in all of their regulations so I'm thinking they are fine and that there is no need to toss about $20 worth of a med down the drain.
Would anyone know how long Vicodin is safe to keep? I wouldn't be surprised if the real answer is 5 years or more as I came across some drug [not a narcotic] while searching online where the previous three year expiration was now updated to being safely used five years later for pills made three years ago. I think it might have been Cipro.

Thanks in advance
Mike Walsh

When I used to get bottles of hydro from who know who in you know where, the expire dates were usually around 2 years away so 1/03 delivery owuld be good till around 1/05 give or take. Depending on your storage conditions, I bet the meds are still good but the only way to find out is to take one.

My money is on the bet they are good!

I did some research on this very thing about a year ago when I stumbled upon the very same situation- only percocet. Apparently, the drug may increase or decrease in potency after that 1 year mark, but is safe to take for a while after (i.e. your meds are prolly still good).

Take care,
G

P.S. If you don't get something more specific (I think I recall it saying shelf-life around 4 years, but to be honest, I don't remember if that's right or just what I think I recall, lol) and you want something more specific- do a google or some other engine search on the shelf-life for the drug and you'll find what you're looking for. That's how I found it.

I was told by my primary care physician that using a medication after the expiration date would not hurt you. That the medication just may not work anymore for your symptoms. Maybe he was referring to the meds that he was prescribing at the time, but it seemed like he was making a blanket statement. I'm just passing on what my PCP told me. I'm not telling anyone to take something that they are not absolutely sure about - and like I said - he may have just been referring to the meds he was prescribing to me at the time(which I can't remember what they were). Please don't anyone flame me. I hope I was clear with my response and that I certainly don't want anyone to just take my little own opinion and run with it. Take care!

Most likely they are still good. If anything they may have less affect but like the one poster said, try one to find out.
I doubt they have lost all their potency.

Re: Hydrocodone 7.5/750 mg - LIQUID VS TABLETS? [Re: Melody]
      #161543 - 05/12/04 01:16 PM

Hello,

My pain recently took a turn for the worse and I was put on Hydrocodone 7.5/750. My pain comes on very suddenly, out of the blue when I am not expecting it and I need fast relief- so I was put on liquid Hydrocodone because it works faster than the tablets.

It seems to me that the liquid does not work as well or last as long as the tablets. Am I crazy though? I don't understand how that is possible since they are the same exact medicine. But I swear it seems that way. Is it just in my head? What's the deal here!? Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is?

My daughter was once prescribed liquid hydrocodone also and she hated it, she said it did work faster but tasted awlful and made her nauseated. I didn't even know it existed until then.

i've also been perscribed the liquid version. Personally i liked it. maybe it's the alcohol content in there....hehe i do agree it wears off faster though and i would guess that has something to do with that fact that you absorb it so much faster to begin with. too bad you can't get half your script in liquid and the other half in pill form that way if you take 2 at a time you could take one of each or if you take half a pill and half liquid you might get the quickness of the liquid and the length of the pill. just a thought don't even know if they would do that kind of thing.

Zilla - you are not crazy. Liquid hydro does work immediately, but doesn't last long at all. I much prefer the pill form. Also, I agree w/bucket. Having both would be ideal.

the only diferance is the amount of apap. soem people report that with less apap they have less pain relief. on the whole most people would rather have less apap. truthful there is very little differance.

Well...Mike...were they good? Inquiring minds want to know if hydro REALLY does lose it's potency if it sits.

Thanks!

Pretty much everyting comes in liquid form, (if u ask specifically for it)
I get MS in liquid.. cuz I am laryngectomee, and have trouble swalowing any pills, got roxicet (percocet in liquid form) and now Morph*ne in liquid form.. just works better for me that way .. just started on f*ntanyl patches, they dont seem to be doin the trick.... but VERY compassionate doc upped from 50 to 100's... gonna give it a few days and see it that helps..... hope so..... but, we'll see??
Wishin all a pain free day,

Vicodin ES is 7.5/ 750 I am not sure where the 450 came from, perhaps it was a type from the pharmacy?

I'd be more inclined to think she made a mistake with the 450...should be 500.

Also, my thoughts on liquid vs tablets. First of all. The ONLY difference in the absobption time is the time it takes a tablet form to break down...maybe 5 or 10 minutes. It STILL takes about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes for the liquid to really kick in. I do agree that liquid forms seem to have a greater effect up front then drop in effectiveness faster than a pill form does. As for me, I prefer pills. But I am also going to be stuck with liquids (and rectal Dilaudid) for awhile as my jaw will be wired shut for 6 weeks following my jaw reconstruction surgery in July.

Sorry, Did not mean to start my first post off subject, that just caught my eye. Anyway I have R/Arthritis. Really unbearable pain. My Doctor has put me on Vicodin 10/660. I take 6 per day. I know I will get addicted, because for the fist time in 5 years, the pain has eased way up. I have been using this about a year. He tells me to stop worrying, Why live in pain? I do agree, but they seem to make me sweat a lot and oh! the unusual dreams. Thanks for listening, Oh! and reduction in sex drive. I am 47. Hope Ya;ll have a good pain-free day. Cherboy

I had the same spike in that department. I am 50 and off hydro, the first week I was sniffing everything like a dog. It really surprised me (in retrospect)..

cherboy -

I'm sure you must already know this but.... Be careful with the amount of APAP you are ingesting every day by taking 6 tabs each of which contains 660(?)mg! If you are really taking that much, I would definitely switch to another similar medication with less APAP! Also, you might ask your own doc to order liver function tests on you - since APAP is so toxic to the liver. Or is the "660 mg" just a typo? Vicodin usually comes only with 500mg or 750 mg APAP in addition to the hydrocodone component...

Regards -

I hope I am posting in the right place. I just received some meds today and they are not listed on rxlist. They are white pills with a split down the center and the imprint says M363. Does anyone know what these are? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

no there is a 660, im currently taking hydro 10/660, i know its not great on the liver but so far liver tests are ok, been on hydro for 3 years since cancer diagnosis, hydro and xanax, great combo lol, still better than being in pain, i have found a great doc who helps me but still use op's occasionally for a stronger dose when needed, or for more when i take a few too many, my doc only gives me so many a month and then im on my own

Sorry if this is slightly OT, but concerning hyrdocodone:

I was on this board about a year ago due to injuries to my back and legs that hurt like hell. I thought it was all in my mind, but the three docs I went to (two of them specialists) said no.

I am going to see my neurologist tomorrow. I am concerning that he might not give me hyrdocodone, even though I received it last time, because of the drug-scares in the MD community.

Anyway, I want to be prepared to find something that will work well if I have to go to an IOP. How is this temgesic buprenorphine or Darvocet compared to Hyrdo? What do you think the strongest thing I could get from a IOP (besides something crazy like oxycontin), so I could have an emergency supply for these flares that are starting to make my life hell?

Thanks!

H

Don't know what temgesic buprenorphine is but Darvocet, Darvon do not compare to hydro.

I've only had temgesic for hydro withdrawal, and it didn't seem to do much for my pain. I may have been on a tiny amount, though (I was hospitalized at the time, and they refused to give me hydro because they knew that I got my script from an OP and didn't consider it legit).

I would think the strongest thing you're going to find on an IOP is codeine or dihydrocodeine. I haven't researched it lately, so maybe things have changed.

Well, one of the issues is possible allergy side-effects, I imagine that the hearing problem could fall under that. And I know that when you take a medication that impairs your in some way it normally dulls the senses of clogs your head. Something like that could effect sinus pressure/hearing while you take the medication.
