Ativan vs. Klonopin
      #96602 - 08/29/03 06:04 AM

I have been taking klonopin for about 3 years. I decided to try some Ativan which is coming today. Has anyone tried both of these meds? If so, what are the differences in how they make you feel?

Thanks.

Nothing makes me sleep better than Ativan, but doesn't do much for anxiety.

In my opinion the Klonopin is more sedating and stays in your system longer than Ativan. I found them both to be equally good for anxiety - I just think the Klonopin lasts longer.

Ativan just makes me sleepy and a little depressed. Of course I take the generic(Mylan)...Does nothing for true anxiety(well, I guess if you are asleep, you're not anxious,eh?) Not real practical in the daytime tho. My doc suggested Klonipin, but got shipped out to Iraq while I was "thinking about trying it", so didn't get the opportunity. Ativan works great for some people tho. Good luck!

I genrally consider Ativan to be less potent then Klonopin. Also flonazepam is a short acting benzo while clonezapam is a long acting benzo. It would probably be best to stay on the Klonopin mainly because short acting benzo's has had a larger correlation with seizures (when suddenly stopping them) then long acting benzo's. But whatever floats your boat , if it helps.. it helps, I say try it. Peace, Bromo

If you can get Ativan Sublingual 2mg, I think you'll find it as fast and effective for anxiety as 1mg of Xanax, though less "euphoric," which is why most Docs prefer Ativan. I haven't seen any OP's or IOP's that offer the SL form of Ativan, though. In ER once they gave Ativan to me IV with one of those little fixed dose - tape on styrettes (is that correct name?). It was very effective at reducing anxiety quickly. Those would be great, if you could buy them from an OP or IOP Both Ativan and Xanax have 1/2 lives of about 8-10 hours, if I recall correctly, so you can start getting some rebound anxiety after 4-5 hours. Klonopin has a 1/2 life of about 20 hours and, if you take it every night before going to bed, it never completely clears your system, so you don't get a rebound. If I'm flying somewhere, I'd wash down an Ativan or a Xanax with a drink in the bar before departure. Usually sleep for a good 4-5 hours on the plane -- I'm the one next to you snoring For overnite sleeping pill with no rebound anxiety next day, Klonopin is my benzo of choice.

I have tried Ativan, Klonopin, and many other drugs for insomnia/poor sleep quality. For me, Klonopin was far superior to Ativan. I have an extremely bad sleep disorder (undiagnosed, but nevertheless real). Klonopin has been a life saver and I have been on it for 5 years.

I have found that Klonopin is much stronger and lasts much longer than Ativan. When I wake up in the middle of the night (6 hours after taking Klonopin), my brain has a tingling feeling.

I'm sure you already know this, but just in case you don't - If you decide to stop Klonopin, do a good taper. I once didn't bother getting a new Rx and I was sick for 10 days. I didn't realize it at the time that I was experiencing withdrawls.
