FROM ANOTHER MORE SPECIFIC POST - AN INTELLECTUAL/SPIRITUAL CHALLANGE:
We have a problem in this area of the "legal/illegal" due to certain widely accepted religious/ethical concepts. The major misconception is that there is a difference between physical pain and mental/emotional pain; or more generally between the physical realm and the emotional/mental realm. This is called mind-body dualism and was proposed ~400 years ago by Rene Descarte to allow science to study the physical, while allowing the church to continue to maintain dominion over the spiritual. Before I drift too deep here, I'd just like to point out that most of our judgements about what is recreational drug use ("bad") and what is medicinal drug use ("good") result from this ancient misconception. Put simply - almost everything you think you know is wrong! For those of you with an inclination toward intellectual inquiry, chase the URL in my "signature" below under Parallel Universes. Very interesting article, I enjoyed reading it. I wonder if my doppelganger has 2 herniated lumbar disks too?!? Just my opinion, but it seems that every so often in this country, a self-appointed "moral guardian" comes along and convinces government that a particular act is wrong and should be outlawed. There have been and will be plenty of Carrie Nations and Harry Anslingers looking out for our "moral health" and will ensure that anything that is not in their own personal code of ethics will be denied to everyone else. I am waiting for the day when some moral guardian decides that I can't have a steak or a hamburger anymore because of cholesterol and cruelty to animals etc. JMHO...
