My home computer has ME istalled on it, it hs been running very slow lately, I also have a laptop, which has windows xp. the xp has a place in systems were you can go and delete temporary internet files. I am not sure if that actually helps the peformance. Does anyone know how to erase these files on window ME?
Is there anything else I can do, to make this thing go bit faster,
Thanks for the help

I have Windows ME (hate it hate it hate it) and this is what I do.. Go to Tools on Internet Explorer, then click on internet options, and then you'll see where it says to delete temporary internet files. Hope it helps!

Hey Jordan, I use this utility called "window washer" to clean up my computer. Just go to CNET.com, click on the download section and do a search for "window washer". It costs $29.95, but they give you a 30 day trial period. This little piece of software will clean all your tracks, history, etc. It is real easy to use.
My mom is running ME and it was getting real slow, so when I visited her, I downloaded this little piece of software for her. Her computer was so cluttered with "junk" , that it took the window washer almost 2 hours to clean it. When we were done , we had recovered almost 1200 megabytes of free space on her computer (thats more megs than my old computer had) and it ran like a brand new machine .
And while you are at CNET, also download "Adware" This utility is free and will clean all of those ugly spy's that have been dumped on your computer.

Location of the file:
C/windows/temporary internet files
You can delete everything in it if you wish too. I empty mine every few days. Just need to keep the file, thats all.

Hi Terri
If you check the VIP,"Computer Forum",there is a ton of threads in there for tweaking your pc to get it cleaned up and running faster. I know because I asked most of the questions about this. HAH!
Delete Cookies,Delete Temp Internet Files,Disk Defrag,Run Speed Disk,Disk Cleanup,Delete History and Cache then restart. You should see an improvement in speed and recovered disk space too.
If you have Scan Disk and click the box "Automatically Fix Errors",this will check and repair any errors on C drive which will improve overall performance too.
Also, you can delete any old/unused Bookmarks(favorites) and Documents.

Thankyou Bhamdave, and Jeremiah, Tried to go to internet explorer, and erased temporary internet files, didn't do anything for the performance.
One other question: I bought an update version of windows XP, downloaded it on my laptop, and registered it 30 days later, Can I use this again on my home computer, I didn;t know if you are allowed to use the upgrade version on more than one computer, since i only have one registration #. as you can tell, I am not very bright when it comes to computers.
I really appreciate all of your great advice!!

I apologize for writing a book while trying to help you. In teaching computer skills I've found people make less mistakes and are happier with the outcome when they have more knowledge on the subject.

Terri, sorry but Microsoft will tell you that you have to purchase another copy of XP, as it is only allowed on one computer. Sad, but true.
I feel like if I purchase a product I could use it on as many computers as I like, as long as they are my own personal computers.

I'm sorry, I thought you just ignored (you thanked everyone, excluding me) my "lengthy" post and if it wasn't of any help it was just taking up space. Best if kept off the board-U-ME: assuming gets me everytime LOL.
PS. If you still need help I'll repost.

I keep the disk cleanup icon on my desktop and clear all the files about once a week.
Go to start, then programs, then accessories, then system tools, then drag the icon to your desktop. Will keep your maching running smooth all the time!

Aren't you cute..LOL I just read your post...and..I've been working on my "Next Book" hehehe. I sure do wish these posts would show up when they're posted..whine.
I'm going to try to shorten this slightly.Ready?
Go to: start, programs, accessaries, system tools, maintenance wizard ( Note: when you click on M.W it will automatically start the cleanup)
What this will do is defragment your pc then do a disk cleanup.
-if you've never done it before be prepared because it could take hours
-IMPORTANT= when it has finished, RESTART your computer
-this needs to be done on a regular basis, depending on how much you use your pc...
-you can schedule them to run automatically using the "task scheduler" ,- you can run them separately: "disk defragmenter" and "disk cleanup", or -you can use "M.W." as described above. You can access all three methods in your "system tools"
I prefer to run them rather than use the task scheduler so they aren't running/interferring when I want to use my pc. Also...I know to restart.
If you have never "cleaned up" your computer before....your not going to believe the difference!!!
Word of advice: THOROUGHLY RESEARCH BEFORE you download any freeware, shareware, etc. online. NOTHING IS FREE, alot of them will take over your computer, mess it up totally, add spy's hidden within their program, etc. etc. Be Careful!! Especially if your not that computer literate. In general your better off to avoid the hassles, headaches and crashes by just buying the product from a store.
Well I've managed to write a LONGER BOOK than the first I do believe...and I didn't even touch on all the topics haha. What can I say....other than I hope you read this one LOL

Charm, Thankyou so much, I have heard about defragmenting, but have always been afraid I'd screw something up. I am going to run this today, and we'll see how it works. I took notes while reading your post.
Thanks again!!

Hi Did you see my post above? I left out some things because alot depends on other programs you have on your system...in particular..do you have McAfee VirusScan & what version, or Norton Antivirus, etc. PLEASE tell me you have virus protection of some kind! If you don't..BUY ONE NOW! It's a MUST HAVE if your going to be online! I could tell you horror stories of dealing with viruses, worms, etc.
Anyway...let me know if I can help with anything else.
