I watched this tonight, I have been taking neurontin for five years now for nerve leg pain. Thanks goodness I wasn't taking it for Bi-polar disorder like the lady was...It was scary to see though and hear this guy telling how doctors would up patients dosages for the all mighty dollar. I Started out on 300mgs a day and now take 3800mgs a day, but honestly it does work for me...I hope its not all in my head.

No, please don't start thinking that! It makes sense to me that a drug that was developed for seizures would be helpful in nerve pain and management.
Believe me, when a 'miracle' cure for a condition is found from a medication not originally intended for it, who wants to argue. Thank Heaven!
But these days, the amount of pressure put on you to take things that have nothing to do with what you came in for---you know Prozac is turning out to be a bit more of a mixed blessing than we were told for so long. For a while, no matter what, Prozac would help it somehow.
On a personal note, based on my history, I might have done better with SSRIs, had I been dosed say, 2 weeks out of 4 or every other day or really heavy for one month and then...observation. But no....
Lilly was going for the big money and they wanted people on it for life. People like me build up a resistance/tolerance which is too bad, considering other ways it might have helped.
You've all heard me whine like this about Purdue Pharma, so you can collectively groan now. I would.

It's just that the frustration is so intense because the chemical properties are there, the research is there, the possibilities are there, but all filtered thru forecasting and marketing.
You know, take what works for you and run with it. I just posted this because I am so sick of a drug being unattackable for the first five-fifteen years, and then suddenly, oh yeah, your doctor always kind of thought that way too--oh, and look at all these case studies.
Oh well.

Good post. AD's are the current fad drug. Dr's are not unlike fashion desiners or music companies. They are driven by mktg. driven fads. Right now, AD's which are not controlled substances are the first line for everything. Take the AD Rx and ignore it. Call the doc back and say it causes insomnia and panic attacks -- most doc's will Rx Xananx or Ativan to address these "side-effects" as long as their butt is covered by an Rx for an AD. We live in the age of managed care, it is our job to intelligently mangage our care.

God, that's really infuriating!!! I have bipolar and i'm taking topomax. That's for epilepsy and its offlabel use is for bipolar disorder. Thankfully I really trust my doctor and my combo of medicines has been a godsend, but to think that some "SALES REP" can deem to practice medicine makes me wanna holler, ya know. And not it's not all in your head.
That's why sites like DB are so critical and being informed and doing our own research and never blindly accepting what anyone says is important to our own health.
Hope all stays well.!!

I just found this link; which happens to be under bi-polar, but they've been cross-prescribing a few meds lately, so it works, don't let throw you!

Hi Prettyday

Thanks for the story,I read it on MSNBC,too.

Quite shameful revelation for this pharmacutical company, but we already know they are out to bilk as much money as they can.I'm thankful this has come to light, yet, sorry for all the patients this deception has hurt.

Great link!

I work in a doctors office and while I enjoy the 400$ catered lunches and cool pens the drug reps bring, I couldn't agree more. Mostly they are sales people, with like a few days of inservice on the particular drug they are promoting. Its mostly AD's and Cox-2's for this office. Yes, they advise the docs on the doseage and indications while they have little or no medical training. They just bribe us with food to get us to listen to their little presentation.

As for neurontin that drug made me almost die!! I have fibro and my moron rheumatologist gave me that in a huge dose to start. I had a panic attack, couldn't breathe, was so dizzy though I was going to die. It turns out it may work for nerve pain, but I have fibro. Its not indicated for my condition. Malpractice!!

Okay, I can't help it.

I told you so.

My psychiatrist, too, put me on this "miracle drug" over 3 years ago. She gave me 300mg a night to start, to see if it would help with sleep. When I "tolerated" it (although for some strange reason began mensstruating very heavily for several weeks although I was on the pill and very much underweight at the time) she increased it to 300x3, "for mood stabilization", I nearly killed myself.

Neurontin is NOT a psychiatric med, as this article well shows. What it doesn't mention (I feel like the lone messanger bringing the news, obviously this company has been far too busy the past 10 years trying to deceptively market its product to do any further research) is that use of neurontin has been linked with endometrial cancer. I haven't any links on this, this is merely the observation of an OB/GYN who happens to be my mother. Note: Please don't freak out if you are a woman taking nuerontin Just make sure to keep in close contact with your OB/GYN, letting him or her know that a link has been established between the two, and watch your own body for signals. My body was obviously reacting to the neurontin, but your's might not. Then again, it might.

As we say over and over again on this board, watch out for yourself, know your body, know your limits. Take the information you get here and research further on your own. Your doctor cannot be expected to know all of this, even if it did break on dateline. (Incidentally, I read a transcription of those tapes in Harper's Magazine several months ago). There's only one way to find the truth, and that's to take it into your own hands.

Obviously, the pharmaceutical companies aren't concerned with truth.

For some reason, I cannot get the story to come up. Can someone fill me in? I was just, today, changed from Neurontin to Topomax by me Neuroligist per my suggestion. after taking Neurontin for almost 2 years, I have been on my period for 4 months and gained a significant amount of weight over 6 weeks, so we a re hoping this medication may turn out to be more helpful.
