Warning:Registering online for Do not Call list
      #84979 - 06/29/03 06:25 AM

Just something to think about. I was going to register online for the new telemarketing do not call list...but..I do not want the government to have my email address!!! When you register you give your telephone number...therefore your name!! Then they request your email address to confirm your on the list...result: GOVERNMENT has all your info. Maybe I'm just untrusting, but I'm sure they'll use that "List of millions" for more than just telemarketing. I'll wait until I can call from my phone!!! Just something you might want to think twice on.

You are SO correct..you can either do this or just send a mass mailing of your personal info to the govt...To all agencies, just in case you are afraid one has missed you..this is the simpliest, silly, "voluntary citizen registration",voluntary compliance sting...yet to come down the pike...hurry and get in on it before the list is full!

The simplest way to deal with telemarketers is one at a time. When they call tell them to "Put this number on the no-call list". They are required to do so. After a while, your calls should diminish substantially. I only wish it that easy to get off spam lists.

As far as privacy goes; Oh, I don't even want to get into it. One thing for sure, I NEVER give my SSN to anyone except select government agencies (IRS,Dept. of Revenue, VA). Impossible to live this way? No, just frusterating, I have car insurance, bank account, cellphone, credit cards. It can be done.

The Western states can register by phone. All you need to do is call from your home phone and touch-tone in your phone number. It's good for five years. There's no hurry, though and no privacy concerns for on-line registration because of their web site's privacy policy. Even if you're on the list, telemarketers can call you through 9/30. They will have telephone registration available for the entire country before that if you're afraid to give them your e-mail.

I had the slickest telemarketer call me a couple of days ago. First my son answered and she played 20 questions with an 11 year old! Then I grabbed the phone from my son and she proceeded to ask me my address and is this my correct birthdate, I said hold up, what do you want my info for? She says so I can send you your new credit card. I then asked what card? She told me and then I was really upset at that point and yelled I don't have that card. Where did you get my info, and don't you dare send me a card. I can not believe that some of them have our personal info, she was reading my address and birthdate till I stopped her. If a silly telemarketer can get your info, what is to stop the government? Makes you think.

Great point Charm! I certainly do not want the government getting hold of any more information on me than what already exists. However, I think the point that is made about telemarketers being able to get hold of your personal info is also very scary to me. I simply politely tell each telemarketer that calls that I am busy, thank them for calling but I am not interested and hang up. I have worked as a telemarketer as a second job and know what it is like to have someone slam the phone in your ear. I do try to consider that the person on the other end of the line is simply trying to make a living. Just MHO and thanks for listening. :

i have to add , the Fraternal Order of Police is the worst telemarketer i have . They call EVERY day for a donation ( at 8:30 am ) i am so SICK of them , i dont even bother answering the phone. But at 8:30 am each day , i wake up to that phone call , its my wake up call now. Cant shake them no matter how many times i tell them not to call

THey are bad, but also the phone companies that call and want you to switch. I have had so much trouble with AT&T. I was nice the first 10 tiimes then I started to get a little ouchy wiht them, then I got down right rude and I have not heard from them again, at least for a while. Bill collectors tend to be a bit persistant also

Tansun, how right you are The Dreaded FOP. They called me about 6 months ago, and I told them I would donate 50 bucks, they in return mail you some stupid FOP sticker, well about a week after the call, I got pulled over on I-71, by a state cop. I got a ticket for 76/65, so the FOP, calls me back and asks where's the donation you promised. I reply'ed by saying I just made a 126.00 donation, by paying my fine for a speeding ticket,, and slammed the phone down.
Now I am getting letters from them,. Kind of looks like a collection notice, hopefully they can't make me pay it.
I haven't had a speeding ticket in 16 years, so you think they might let you slide going 11 miles over,

There was an article in my local paper the other day. It seems a retired cop got a call for donations for the highway patrol. He agreed and sent some money. He then started thinking about it and made a few calls. It seems the company that does the phone calls keeps 90% of the donations and only 10% goes to the highway patrol.

The highway patrol quit calling me some time ago. I feel I make my donations with my husband's speeding and my seatbelt tickets. The DOT are always ticketing him over something petty also. What I am sick of is the daily MCI and Discover Card calls. They are daily! How many times do you have to tell these people no before they get it?

Terri...that is so ridiculous! I actually had a similar thing happen to me, made the donation...got the stupid sticker...and promptly got a ticket. They got no more $$ from me. As for the Do Not Call List - I signed up so fast my head was spinning. They can have my e-mail address, I don't care - I just don't want to get any more of those stupid, annoying calls!! It was worth it to me.

Hey Chevygal,

As far as debt collectors, under the "Fair Debt Collection Practices Act",once you tell them over the telephone not to contact you further at home or work,by law, they cannot. It is better(and documented w/Cert. mail) to send them a written letter advising them not to contact you. If they do,you can sue them. For more info, contact the FTC
They will mail you, free, tons of literature regarding your Consumer Rights.

I signed up this weekend. Can't stand the calls from the telemarketers. Drives me nuts !!!!!!!!!! You can go to hotmail or yahoo if you are worried about the email address. Listen if big brother wants the information they are going to find it one way or the other.

It is all federal agencies, if they want to know they can get the information from the IRS or from some clerk that owes them a favor.

Just remember that telling a debt collector to stop contacting you doesn't mean the collection process stops...it just means your less informed about what's going on...besides...if you owe money...you should pay it.

I really do hate to be the bearer of bad news. I also hate the FOP calls because I donated thru 3 speeding tickets...and didn't hesitate to tell him so, and get this... he rudely hung up on me (broke my heart). However, if you read the site where you register online you will see that the do not call list DOES NOT APPLY to the FOP, or any charity or donation seekers! Nor does it apply to polititions, or anyone you have inquired to, ask about, etc. etc. etc. They added a loophole for just about every "annoying caller of any kind" to jump through!! That was ONE of the first Red Flags to me! I mean if they were really doing this to stop the annoying calls..WHY did they make a path around the law for them?!! You would have to read the site to see what I mean. Yes you can eventually get some or most of them to stop (not the FOP) by requesting it. I have to admit I don't get that many calls. I think they took my name off years ago because when they would call and very rudely go on and on without giving you a chance to get a word in...I would politely say no thank you not interested and hang up...and They would still be talking and not skip a beat!! If I'm feeling ornary I'll stay on the line and irritate them! One of the best ones I do is turn everything they say around, mix it alittle and repeat it to them...they get so upset THEY HANG UP ON ME LOL

In all honesty the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about the law was "whoa..look at all the jobs that will be lost, and especially the way things are right now anyway". I do realize they are just doing their job, heck I was even considering appling for the job awhile back for the added income...the pay wasn't bad at all and it was close to home! But after reading the site where you register, all my concerns for "jobs lost" disappeared quickly.
I don't like being rude to telemarketers or anyone for that matter but the ones that call and won't let you get a word in (which I feel is extremely rude to me), they leave you no choice but to hang up or listen to them for 5 minutes. In general I treat them the way they treat me and I can live with that.
Also..to touch on the personal info...it would blow your mind if you knew the info I myself can get on someone. Most I won't disclose, for obvious reasons, but if you want to PM me I'll let you in on one that you won't believe.

I do tend to agree with registering online, only because I am paranoid by nature, but in all honesty, the "Big Bro" can get ANY info it wants on you ANY time it wants too!

But as far as the DO NOT CALL list, it is GREAT!!! We have had it my state for the last few years, and I don't get any calls whatsoever from telemarketers, except for the yearly FOP and the yearly Firefighter call. Plus (thanks to someone on this board) I have something offered by my phone company called "PRIVACY DIRECTOR"... if someone calls you and their # does not register with caller ID or is marked annonymous, or unavailable, it will prompt them to say their name and it gives you the option, after listening to their recording to send them a "I DONT KNOW YOU" recording, or an option to take the call. It only costs 2.99 a month and since having this I ONLY get calls from people that I want to hear from, even the FOP and Firefighters calls have stopped, because I just dont answer them. I dont know if any other phone companies carry it, so check into it, its HIGHLY recommeneded by my house. But if you live in the south.... BELLSOUTH.... you can get it. I LOVE IT!!!! and would never go back!

I bought one of those telezappers and it works pretty well. The phone still rings but it cuts them off when you pick up. It is also supposed to send a signal to their computers that the number is disconnected. It has really cut down on my telemarketer calls a lot. I could tell a big difference in the first two weeks.
