HELP PROTECT YOUR FAMILY'S MEDICAL PRIVACY

Tell your doctors about the
"HIPAA Country Doctor Escape Route"
Under the new federal rules passed in the "HIPAA" bill, your medical records will be sent to third-parties -- such as the government, marketers, and insurance companies -- without your consent.

The new rules only require "notification" that your records will be disclosed.

Some say the solution is to roll back the regulations to the rules proposed last year - that allowed a semblance of patient consent.

But we don't think that's the solution either. Under those rules, if you refused to sign the consent, your doctor could be forced to withhold treatment, or be prosecuted for treating you without the government consent form. That's not consent - that's coercion!

Think it only applies to criminals? Think again.

Every medical patient in the U.S. will be subject to new regulations that give away your right to restrict the use of your private medical records.

Government agencies, insurance companies direct mail marketers and law enforcement can look at your confidential information - even all of your old paper records from years ago.

And your doctor's hands will be tied - he'll have to hand them over. All you can hope for is a notice of where they've gone.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT…
ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU.

PATIENTS - Ask your doctor to stay out. If not, ask to remove your records.

DOCTORS - Escape HIPAA and refuse to participate. It's all legal You'll save money on compliance and protect your patients' privacy !

SIGN - the AAPS"Patient Privacy Protection Petition". AAPS has been working since 1996 to stop these terrible regulations. We've filed lawsuits and are trying to repeal them in Congress. Rep. Ron Paul, a doctor and member of AAPS, has introduced a bill that would do just that, and shut down government plans for a national "patient i.d." and government database of all medical records.

But in the meantime, they go into effect in April 2003. The only guaranteed way to protect your privacy is to ask your doctor to become a "non-covered" entity under HIPAA.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:
TALK TO YOUR DOCTORS

Give the "Stop HIPAA" flyer to your doctor, dentist, chiropractor and others.
Ask him to honor Model Patient Privacy Advisory, and give him the "Non-Disclosure Request."
If he won't, ask to remove your records from his files and bring with you when you visit.

I must admit, I'm a bit confused on the new HIPPA law.
I understood it to mean MORE protection of patients' rights/confidentaility, than before.
Example: Before, regarding law enforcement seeing your records, the law was very vague. The new law requires a court order/subpoena in order for them to see records.

Also, the new law states that patients have an absolute right to see their records(within 30 days).

What do you all make of it????????
