EarthLink to offer software to block '100%' of spam
By Adam Steinhauer / Bloomberg News
EarthLink Inc., the third-largest U.S. Internet-access service, said it will offer software to its subscribers that can block "virtually 100 percent" of their spam e-mail.
The new "spamBlocker" will be offered for free to EarthLink subscribers starting tomorrow, the Atlanta-based company said in a statement. EarthLink will begin an advertising campaign, including print and television ads, for the new software in late summer or early fall, said Jim Anderson, the company's vice president of product development.
The amount of spam, or unsolicited commercial e-mail, through EarthLink's system has risen more than fivefold over the past 18 months, Anderson said. An analyst who's seen the spamBlocker program said it's likely to block some e-mail that isn't spam and that businesses that send spam will eventually find a way to circumvent the program.
"I have a much higher degree of confidence in spammers' ability to outsmart technology than I have in technology's ability to defeat spammers," said Jim Nail, an analyst with Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nail said he doesn't own EarthLink shares.
EarthLink subscribers who download spamBlocker will only receive e-mail from senders who are listed in their personal address books, Anderson said. SpamBlocker requires senders of e-mail who aren't known to the recipient to fill out a short questionnaire. EarthLink will then send an e-mail to the recipient giving them the option of adding the sender to their address book.
"The vast majority of communications are going to be from people you know," Anderson said in an interview. "What we've done here is taken a permission-based approach."
The software also contains the features of the "spaminator" software that EarthLink's previously distributed, Anderson said. That program identifies senders of mass commercial e-mail and blocks them. It stops 70 percent to 80 percent of junk e-mail, he said.
Forrester's Nail said the spamBlocker is similar to software offered by Mailblocks Inc., of Los Altos, California. Nail said he's tested Mailblocks' software and found that it stopped some e- mail that wasn't spam.
"A couple of my friends have not been able to figure out how to get through the challenge," he said.
Mailblocks said three weeks ago in statement that it has sued EarthLink alleging patent infringement.
"We've reviewed the complaint and we vigorously defend our position," EarthLink spokesman Jerry Grasso said.
The growing volume of spam e-mail, much of it for products such as mail-order Viagra and financial schemes, is taking up computer-users' time and hard drive space. Two-thirds of junk e- mail contains false or deceptive claims, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has said.
EarthLink, with 5 million subscribers, has filed lawsuits against senders of spam. The company won a $16 million judgment three weeks ago and a court order for Howard Carmack, of Buffalo, New York, to shut down his e-mail operation. EarthLink charged that Carmack had used hundreds of stolen credit cards and fake identifications to open 343 e-mail accounts that sent 1 million spam e-mails a day.
Carmack was arrested two weeks ago on charges of identity theft. At his arraignment, he entered a plea of not guilty.
Shares of EarthLink today rose 3 cents to $6.38 at 3:59 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. They have risen 17 percent this year.
The company said its part of a coalition of e-mail providers trying to find ways to stop spam. Other members include AOL Time Warner Inc.'s America Online and Microsoft Corp.'s MSN, the two largest Internet-access services.

I got a good idea Kath, stand up go out to your garage and grab a shovel or a baseball bat, take either into your home where your puter is and make sure your tower is in clear site take the weapon of choice and smash the puter till there are pices all over your carpet or floor when you are finished take the mess you made and put it into a garbage bag and leave outside for the garbage man to pick it up, spam is gone.

I have been using Earthlink's SpamEliminator and Pop Up blocker for almost 2-3 years. I might get 2 or 3 spam emails in my in box but most of it gets caught before it goes down to me. It works great and so does they pop up blocker. I am a happy earthlink customer

We were Earthlink customers up until just last week (actually our account does not officially close until the 9th) and my SO had his email forwarded from his old Earthlink account to our new one. Since we did that I have NEVER seen so much spam in my life and we were also using their Spaminator. There must be some way to get mail past that because we are now receiving so much junk (porn included) it's pathetic. UGH!

You can do something about it.CAUCE is a group that has lobbied Congress to make it a crime!!!!It has taken hold.Look at the giant fines and awards the courts are awarding.Sputum is not a nice name, but these guys offer free blocking, tracking, and other tools that are pretty cool.NOTHING is 100% unless you don't turn it on.For every new defense they can make Spammers find ways around it, skinny through it, or just wait til defenses are down. But try some of the tools.Sam Spade and the Who is tracker will open your eyes.I have been a CAUCE member and will rejoin to continue to be in the fight against SPAM.

LOL! I'll try that Phil if this new Earthlink program doesn't work. Actually, it's working out quite well! I'm impressed. Not ONE spam since we've started using it.

You guys need broadband. Then popups become less annoying with all the extra bandwidth as they impede your browsing as much.
Seriously though, I usually bypass clicking on well known pop up sites. Some sites are worse than others and can really completely inundate you with pop ups. There are a multitude of blockers out there, but one of the best ways to rid yourself of popups is to run ad aware (available at tucows.com I believe...pm and I can find a link for you for download) as spyware inadventently picked up while browsing the net (esp. if your cookie permissions are set too low) can sometimes be the main culprit of all the popups.
Unfortuneately until, the powers that be, really act on this problem with stiff penalties to spammers and those that would consume your bandwidth via unsolicited ads, there isn't going to much in the way of relief. Even if they do manage to pass a good piece of legislation, the problem still isn't cured, as most spammers use remailers with untraceable or foreign addresses to send their junk mail.

I use this popup filter:
http://www.meaya.com/
You can test it for a while and it is only $25.00 to buy it. It works great and I can also add sites that I want to allow popups, such as ones that open a new page when you click on a link. I never get popups at all.
