PO Boxes, and US mail policy
      #78497 - 05/25/03 06:22 AM

I purchased a 6month lease on a medium sized mailbox, big enough to fit up to about 10-15 8 1/2 X 11" letters/brochures. I did this for 2 reasons 1 for business purposes, and 2 to relieve some of the overseas mail coming to my home address.

Last week went to the post office opened the box to find 3 business related parcels(with space to spare in the box), and I found a key telling me to open locker # such and such. This locker was sooo big I could have stood in it, after opening the locker I noticed I recieved a overseas delivery from argentina. At first I thought, it must not have fit, checked my PO box, and it fit with ease.

Why would the post office put the overseas parcel in a special locker?? On a side note(and maybe Im paranoid), but if you have even been to a PO box there is no back to the box, so you can look directly into the mail room. Was the overseas parcel put in the locker to put me on candid camera??

Anyone who uses or who has used PO boxes for overseas shipments please tell me your experience(s).

Thanks
Drew

The very same thing happened to me the other day. I was wondering the same. Sorry, but I don't have an answer.

I'm pretty sure you're just being too careful. I think that the postal workers just automatically go to the lockers with packages because it would be a pain to try it in the small box, then have to go over to the locker, and return to your box with the key. So it's automatic.

I have a small box in one of those community boxes at home. I've noticed that one mail carrier always uses the big locker for a CD or DVD, while another one always shoves it into the box. Unfortunately, things that fit from their side do not come out on the front side as easily.

It must be a matter of personal preference.

Take Care,
Toky

Thats my whole point Toky, I rented the larger box to avoid these problems, I checked and the parcel would have fit into my PO with ease, even with the other items inside.

anyone else have any ideas, or has this happened to others. I know several people on this board us PO boxes, please chime in.

Twister,

do you use the 4" X 4" PO box(small), or the 12" X 14"(medium), or the large one that a circus freak could fit into?? I guess what Im asking, was there any reason your overseas parcel would not fit?

PS - another side note now that I think about it if the "man" was playing candid camera the locker was so big he could have photo graphed me from head to toes. Another side note why did the post office not use one of the small or even smaller locked boxes?

Thanks

I dount there is a rhyme or reason as to why it happened and you're just beating yourself up over nothing. If it was a set up, or the like, they are going to get you no matter what, don't you think?

Mr.B,

I have to believe there is some reason. The parcel fit in my PO box there is no doubt about that. Yes I maybe a little paranoid, and maybe the US postal system just has a new protical for overseas parcels.

Mr. B your right what can I do, but if it is some type of monitoring system then I would be wise not to send any other OP based parcels to my PO box.

Im new to using a PO box, and need an experienced Vet to hold my hand on this one.

Thanks all

I think they automatically do that (90% of the time) before knowing the size of the box the package is going to.

I've had that happen before.

On another note, I learned yesterday that some postal workers are real people. :lol

I had a notice in my box and it was a package that had to be signed for. It was an hour after they closed but I could still hear people talking in the back. I spoke to someone through my box and he got my package for me. It was nice of him to do and I really expected him to tell me no. Also, this was a huge Post Office, not a small town one.

Stacy,

Thats a nice theory, but 99% of the material I get in this LARGE PO box is as big if not bigger than then the stated OP parcel. I should also note that I had legal docs sent to this PO box, and on the outside it clearly said "do not fold, or bend", the mailman ignored the clearly stated sticker and had to bend the docs to get them to fit.

When I rented the box, the nice post man also suggested to me that if I get anything bigger than a letter, then it would be wise of me to get the larger box, so that I woudnt have to worry about going to the other end of the post office to unlock my sent material.

Again any vets using a PO box, it would be nice to hear from you.

They have put boxes of mine in those lockers that would have fit in my PO Box. There has been nothing come of it at all. It has been boxes from the same company that they normally just put in my PO Box. I think it just depends on who is putting the mail in the boxes that particular day.

I think you are being paranoid about nothing.

As far as being a "vet", I've been ordering for years and using a PO Box.

Drew, I do use a PO box as well. It's the smallest one, in a small PO, and when I get a package, I get a slip and go to the counter for it.

I order online, I order from ebay, I get all sorts of packages. I think that by the time any package makes it to that destination (your PO), you're in pretty good shape. The clerks don't bat an eye, or sometimes they say "hey those are cool stamps" but that's it. Just the passing of time, chit-chat from worker to consumer.

True, the MIB could be there too, but odds are, they are not. Try to just get a feel for how the PO works, talk to the clerks when you order stamps, etc, just make yourself at home. Hopefully it will make you feel better.

Toky

i have worked at the USPS, u need to take into account that there are a LOT of "space cases" working there....now i'm not pointing a finger at myself, but i did notice weird things happening because the people working there were on automatic and not really computing what they were doing... i wouldn't get too paranoid

I used to have a po box when I lived in an apartment just for security of my mail. I order all kinds of stuff from ebay on. I think without thinking they put envelopes in those larger boxes. They did that several times when I had gotten something. So I would not stress over it.

Thanks all, I guess I wont fret until my next OP parcel gets put into the special locker. I also have non-op overseas related material coming to me, so Ill see if they put that in the special locker.

I don' think you have a thing to worry about Drew. I live in a small town and get packages from all over, I have friends in Europe and order from ebay.

I did have a weird conversation with the postal lady one day. I went to sign for a package from Thailand, she said that she had two from Thailand that day and it was unusual. Guess someone in my town is ordering from the same place With as much mail as they process i'm sure they have seen it all.
