Internet Drug Businesses Under Investigation
Widow Thinks Husband Died From Drugs
POSTED: 5:35 p.m. PDT May 16, 2003
UPDATED: 6:05 p.m. PDT May 16, 2003
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Did a Northern California man -- a former marathon athlete --die after taking powerful drugs obtained over the Internet?
As online pharmacies explode on the Internet, fears are growing about the dangers they could pose.
After watching a special report KCRA 3 first reported last week, a Sacramento widow contacted KCRA, wanting to talk about alleged illegal Internet drugs that she thinks killed her husband.
James Lewis was only 47 when he died. Two investigations of his death are under way -- one by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office and one by the Medical Board of California. They have reached no conclusions yet, but Lewis's widow, Elizabeth Carr, says she is pretty sure she knows what happened.
The former "iron man" competitor had two knee operations and a hip injury that left him in considerable pain, according to Carr. She says he wanted to manage that pain himself.
"It's way too easy to get this stuff, and people don't know. I think he thought he could handle this," Carr said.
Lewis died in April after falling asleep on his couch.
"There was no obvious cause of death. So it's likely this case will depend on the toxicology studies to hopefully give us a more definitive cause of death," Sacramento County assistant coroner Ed Smith said.
Carr said that she found empty foil wrappers for dozens of pills, mostly codeine -- a strong narcotic painkiller that can be addictive. She says she also found wrappers for Valium and Alprax, both anti-anxiety drugs.
The Internet is flooded with online pharmacies, some based overseas and boldly offering narcotics like codeine without a prescription. It's illegal to receive narcotics that are created with opium without a license. But the drugs still make it into the United States disguised as innocent packages. The come from, among other places, New Delhi, India and the French island of Martinique.
"Two weeks after he died, I think I got the first one. I actually opened it up to see, and it was more of the codeine. And then I got another the next day. So I got four total," Carr said.
Carr says Lewis tried to be his own doctor and pharmacist.
"I think it was a combination of the fact that he was up to a high dosage, I think on the codeine, and then he took something that interacted, because he said he didn't feel well," Carr said.
Carr says she will turn all of evidence over to state investigators.
The state medical board is also beginning an investigation into Lewis' death. The board is attacking illegal online pharmacies by going after cyber-doctors who write prescriptions for patients they never seen. But going after overseas drug sellers is much more difficult -- that takes federal enforcement.

I'm responding to myself here folks - there was a picture in the article, I'll post the link here so you all can go see. Does the packaging of these pills remind you all of anyone in particular??? Don't name any names here......

I don't want to repeat myself to you or others, but some won't see my reply to this on the VIP board (duh, this is the free board). I'm just going to copy it over here.
This really burns me up. One thing bothers me about this article besides the obvious concern about investigations into OPs.
It's the fact that the widow and authorities think he was not responsible for his own actions. I'm not saying he deserved to die. Heavens NO! But, if he ordered from OPs that was HIS choice. If he got meds from his PCP, that was his choice. I'm assuming he was DD, but it does not state that in the article. Still, even if he was DD, HE'S the one that ordered the meds, no one twisted him arm. I suppose they are going to try to investigate or sue whatever liquid he used to swallow the meds, if the meds are the cause of death. I mean, why not? If it was due to meds, and he drank a Coke to swallow them, then well, Coca-Cola is also responsible since it contributed. (note the sarcasm).
If indeed he did have some sort of reaction to the meds, that too, was HIS doing (unless a fluke thing but it's still not the OP's fault). He very well could've gone doctor shopping and acheived the same result of ordering lots of codeine from overseas.
It just really ticks me off when people (in this case the widow and authorities) refuse to let the husband accept personal responsibility for his own actions. This is assuming death was due to the meds.
In today's society, it seems like others are becoming more and more responsible for people who abuse/overdue, etc *whatever* it is, be it alcohol or drugs. For example, bartenders are responsible for those they serve alcohol to. People should know when to stop, but they don't. They get messed up and their judgement is impaired and then it's all up to the bartender to know if they're OK to drive home or not.
She may just be hurt and upset and lashing out to anyone and anything she can, but it's still no excuse.

I get so tired of the "blame game" that is so prevalent in today's society. What ever happened to personal responsibility? Sure, it was tragic that this man died, but what about the thousands of tragic stories we can and do hear about that happen as the result of someone buying alcohol?
Rather than rush to investigate/persecute the OP's, why not first examine WHY people feel the need to be their own physician/pharmacist in the first place? Look at the way the medical profession treats people who are suffering. Now, THAT'S a tragedy!

Uh, yikes, the packaging certainly does look familiar. I hope this particular company doesn't get any heat -- They don't deserve it. Points made in previous posts re: personal responsibiity are well-taken. It is a tragedy that this man is dead, however it is not the fault of the company or even the medication (if it was indeed the med.)
Perhaps he had an allergic reaction to codeine (for it to be this severe is extremely rare), or mixed the wrong substances.
Again, the sensationalism of the article was annoying. To describe codeine as a (paraphrasing) potent and dangerous narcotic is laughable. It is on the lowest rung of the opiate ladder, as we know, and is barely efficacious. In addition, it's dangers are minimal.
So there we have another hysterical piece of "journalism" that isn't going to help anyone.

EXACTLY! I totally agree with both of you! It's not the OPs fault, nor the pharmacy that filled the OPs script.
Seems like no one is responsible for their own decisions any more. (over exageration, but you get the point).
Of course, one of our choices was taken away to a certain extent when wearing seatbelts became law. I have always worn mine, but I just don't like big Brother telling me that its mandatory now for my own safety. But, I can understand that a little better than the above situation because there are idiots in this world that don't even buckle up their kids.
sorry to go on a tangent. I'm usually not passionate about things and outspoken. But, when something gets me started - watch out!

To me this looks like a good example of "Media Propaganda".The real focus of this is not to find out why this person died but to use this story to generate more laws to protect people from themselves. If such a thing can be done. But as you read it closely the spin on it is definitly going in the direction of wanting to create more control of peoples private lives by any means possible. Take care.

I'm wondering if they are even looking into the possibility that he meant to take too much medicine. It's a very morbid thought, and may be entirely off-base, but if he was in such considerable pain and was taking anti-anxiety drugs as well as pain meds, maybe he was ready for it to be over. That's not to say that every one who is in pain and taking anti-anxiety meds feels that way, but perhaps he did. Regardless, it was not the OP's fault.

I am in complete agreement with Sweetz. For some reason the government thinks they have to protect us from ourselves.Well the government can't even come up with a medical plan for everyone. Where do they get off putting their noses in our business??I know of alot better places they could be spending money. It only seems to be getting worse. when we were kids we were brought up to be responsible for ourselves, that isn't the case today.

) Suicide. He could not have gotten this far in the OP scene without reading a board or two. He knew what he was doing. Just as I would know what I was doing if I took 150 phonebarbitol and went tp bed.
Edited to add that I know one compant that shipps exactly that way, while others speculate about another. Then there's a pharm I've heard ships that way but haven't used. So please, if you have the skills and the time, send this article to your favorite OP.
2)I KNOW they're one vacation but can some computer savvy person please send a file of that pic with the story to the Co. Just label it important american news. I don't want to lose them.

One more bit of information, that the media has chosen to leave out. They are calling codeine a potent narcotic? They always want to point the finger at the medication in perscription form, but what about all of the toxemia related deaths associated with aspirin, or tylenol, for that matter.
The truth is, that the medical community could have dealt with this unfortunate thing quite well, if the death was actually codeine-related. But, if the man had taken somthing else with the drug, say extra tylenol, or anti-inflamitories, which by the way, kill many people each year, then it was his own fault.
What happened was tragic, but it is primarily due to the government taking the power of the medicine out of our hands and the physicians, by making stupid laws to hamper us. The government should spend more time trying to fix the economy and leave us pain and anxiety people alone!!!

Can someone keep us (or just me ) posted on this. It looks like this comes from someone I know and communicate with often. I owe this person money but would rather send it while "communicating" with them. But I don't want to set myself up for a seizure (knock wood).

With most web browsers just move the cursor to the picture and right click. Then Select: Save Picture As. You've saved the picture on your computer. Then send an e-mail and insert that file to the message as an Attachment.

Not only do I recognize the packing, pills, and the small handwriting at the top of the thin chardboard. I have requested on several occasions for this OP to change return addys as they only use about three diffrent ones, and to at least change the font on their label maker(thinking the letters may not be as easy to spot). Im sure the OP is too busy to hand write on the parcel, but they have to realize they need to change the look of the parcels.
