Medication and Homeland Security
      #59808 - 02/24/03 05:04 PM

I know that we all feel safe in the US, but have you thought about what if you are in harms way of a terrorist attack or catrosphy? What kind of medical reserve should you have if the pharmacies, mail, etc were not operable for 30 days? For a family of 3 or 4 one would need antibiotics, moderate and severe pain medication, your current medications that you are on, anti-biological medicines, and anxiety medications. I'll start off with the first two items needed:
1. Duct Tape
2. Plastic sheets

Could somebody explain the duct tape and plastic sheet thing? I feel stupid for asking but I have no idea how those items could help one in a bio/chemical attack. As far as stockpiling meds, that's a good idea. At a minimum, I'd go nuts if I even ran out of my Prilosec. That heartburn is terrible.

You're supposed to cover all windows, doors, vents etc with plastic then seal with tape. That way you'll suffocate and won't worry about the terrer alerts. But seriously folks, it's a ridiculous idea as many families die every year from carbon monoxide posioning doing the same thing trying to stay warm. If there is another terrorist attack (God forbid) it'll be too late for anyone close by anyway.

half of mine are covered for winter, but it's still mighty drafty in here.

but it is a good point, maybe some of us still have stockpiles left over from y2k? hehe... It is scary to think how many would be very sick, or even die, without their daily medications. Try to explain that one to the doc when you're asking for 6 months extra...or even one.

I just hope the bomb lands on my house and that it's over quickly when it happens. Then I won't have to worry about this med stuff anymore

This is a good topic. I had problems before Y2K getting stocked up on meds. We still have enough MRE's to feed two armies, but medication is another story. My whole family had trouble at the time stocking up on certain meds, even Thyroid medication!! Our vet was the most understanding - he sold us $700 worth of medication for our pets, including phenobarbital in case a critter had to be put down. Most doctor's aren't very understanding when you ask for a couple of months stock of Hydrocodone I think it's a good idea to have several days worth of food and water, but I have to agree the plastic and duct tape won't do much good. Let's pray it doesn't come to that.

Hi, Summer~
Didn't see anything remotely resembling smoke, much less a flame! However, sometimes things just get seen sideways. I got a couple of PMs early on because my style seemed to indicate I was offended or sarcastic, when I didn't mean to be either, especially when I was thanking someone for posting a very thoughtful message!

I'm returning to the topic of this thread, I am sarcastic and I do expect to get flamed: The best you can do in times like these is trying to find a cinema that is showing "The Atomic Cafe" (satirical documentary film about the cold war, produced in the US about 15 years ago, using original govt. films from the 50ies). I still have it on video.

Achim you know I am one of your biggest fans. I think flaming is great. I love to get flamed. But you and I KNOW the rules.

BTW, thanks for that last "flaming" pm.

ON TOPIC-GET LOT'T OF DUCT TAPE EVERYONE!!!

i am getting my cc blocked every time i make an overseas internet purchase. i have to phone and verify i made the purchase. imo this is related to homeland defense and i am suspected of funding terrorism. just like the mccarthy era in the 1950's. pretty scary.

IMO the best use of duct tape and the best prevention against terrorist attacks would be to fix GWBush's mouth securely shut, with several long strips.

Just had to jump in here even though we shouldn't be talking about politics here - it's the recipe for disaster! LOL Hey, at least President Bush isn't playing around with cigars and is trying to get business taken care of That's the beautiful thing about the USA, everyone is entitled to their opinion

To get back on topic though, I think it is a great idea to stock up on many things in the case of war. It will be impossible to stock up on pain meds, but maybe other medications such as antibiotics wouldn't be a bad idea.

How about pentobarbitol, Dramamine, a bottle of wine, and a plastic bag? That'd be more useful than their plastic sheets and duct tape ... which is about the same as the "Duck and Cover" with Cold War schoolchildren told to hide under their desks and their parents given instructions on how to make a backyard or basement nuclear bomb shelter.

This *is* about medication. A fast-acting barbituate might be valuable. Tom Ridge should help us get ready by giving everyone as much as they want.

I have some great .wav files from those movies/days of 'duck and cover'. Also, I agree that the plastic house would be lethal if only because I would never want to live that way. So, does one drink red or white wine with phenobarb and nukes?

Take Care,
Toky

Is phenobarbital available anywhere? Guess I'll have to check that out. For Y2K our vet gave us 100 1/2 gram tablets and said for "emergency euthanasia" of a pet it would take 50 tabs. I'm sure it comes in a higher mg. but it sounds like it would take an awful lot to do the job. Guess that's what the wine is for, eh?

Let's all pray it doesn't come to this. Talk about STRESS....

I think either red or white is correct with phenobarb. I have already taped my duck but I will hold up on the plastic until I need to put it over my head. Seriously, some anti biotic is a good thing to have around as well as some pain meds. Also I just have to say it. I would rather the pres was playing with cigars than bombs. Cigars I understand, bombs scare me.
