A couple of days ago I was just doing my normal random surfing/reading and when I went to close all the windows, the last one was an ad that pushed some celebrity website. I remember it said something like "WHY do the stars HATE the paparazzi? Because we CATCH 'EM IN THE *ACT*!!"
Anyway...this ad said that a "membership" costs something like 79.95, I think - and all I would have had to do is click on that banner, and it would have (it SAID this), had I been on dialup, would have disconnected me from my ISP and called some number that would automatically charge the 79.95 by putting the charge on my PHONE bill for "access".
What scares me the MOST?
The idea of some idiot or some kid clicking on one of those and not paying attention to what they're doing.
I've already had to remove Gator about 3 times, from people not paying attention to what the hell they're downloading and installing on MY computer.
I did read a few years back about porn sites doing this kind of thing without your knowledge, even going so far as to turn OFF the speaker in your modem so you couldn't hear it hang up and dial some number in a foreign country at $20 a minute or something really outrageous like that...and then without knowing, they'd leave the site and still be surfing on this long distance rip-off number.
I just never thought a banner ad would resort to using such tactics, even if they DO state it in the ad. You just better make sure to read the fine print now before you click on a popup ad. If one does it, then there's no telling how many more will try that underhanded tactic.
I don't like it.

My advice? Do what I did & select "turn off pop-up ads" in you browser prefs. Good thing you didn't get scammed!

Okay, call me blonde but could you tell me how one can turn off pop-ups on your browser? I have a pop-up stopper installed (Panicware I think it is) installed but it prevents you from clicking on alot of links. And, please explain in kindergarten terms.
Thanks in advance!

I use something called Popup Manager. Earthlink also has a good popup blocker, but they are starting to make people pay for it. Norton is probably one of the best. My husband and I use a Network so I need to get that installed specifically on my laptop.
It's all so confusing! Also, if you do encounter a popup ad, make sure and click on the X rather than Cancel....

Try the Pow and Cookiewall from www.analogx.com it is free and quite effective. You tell it once what is to be stopped and forget. You never see that pop up again. The Panic ware is good, but cannot be paused like the POW if you want to vote at CNN or Foxnews.
