This may be a stupid question but how does one transfer money to an OP with WU when they won't transfer unless you provide a phone number to where the money is being transferred to? (And this obviously means that the OP doesn't have one listed.)

Western Union does not require a phone number for the receiving party. You can do Western Union transfers online at http://www.westernunion.com . Another hint, if you do it online and use a credit card, your credit card company treats it as a cash advance and charges you whatever they charge for a cash advance. You can avoid this extra fee by using a debit card instead of a credit card.

That is correct no telephone # is needed for the receiving party - nor does the receiver need to provide ID. All he needs is your name and address and the 10 digit MTC number.
Most people have a WU outlet local (mine is a 5 minute walk away). You can get a list of all WU outlets on their website, most are usually in travel agents and banks. I like going down and paying cash, because being a cash transaction I can make it 'invisible' of sorts - I usually give a false name and address, long as I notify the OP of that name /address it's OK, they can collect. I also give only an unregistered pay-as-you-go mobile telephone number. As far as the customer signature is concerned, a simple scribble will do.
All this makes it more difficult to claim back if something goes wrong but to my mind the security makes it worth it.

I've been using Western Union's website too. Haven't encountered any problems regarding phone numbers.

I filled out all the info they needed but the transaction won't go through because I get this message by NOT typing in the recipient's phone number.
Phone number :
W0143 Invalid phone number
I didn't enter the "W0143" either. (?)
I also went to the OP's board and got this message from another user that can't use WU without a number.
i dont get it wu will not process my xferr without a receivers phone number how is everybody else able to order?

Hmmm. WU told me that the receiver MUST show ID to receive the transfer.

I'm seeing a lot of folks having trouble with their credit cards, phone-ins and WU. As I stated in another thread, it's much easier to go to a local check-cashing facility and hand-sign the transfer. Nothing electronic on your end except giving the MTN number.

I could not agree more - keeping it cash is the safest option and you can keep your identity a secret as long as you give OP exact details as written down on the form so they can collect. Pay-as-you-go phone number is a good idea and a scribbled signature.
Harder to claim back if anything goes wrong - but as long as you have the MTN # it should be cool.
I recently sent WU to Interpharm without any ID - only a secret question which OP will inform you about could be needed in order for them to collect. I guess it comes down to the WU guy you are dealing with - some don't know their own rules.

gentlesoul certainly has a very good point about maintaining anonymity but I still feel OK using the web site. I suppose it depends on what you order and your tolerance for risk.
sasha44, could you have inadvertently chosen to use the "notify recipient" service when sending the WU transfer online? If you pay them to notify your recipient then of course they will need a phone number. This might be an easy mistake since WU tries to slide this service in, in kind of subtile way on their web site as a way for them to generate more fees.

No, I didn't use the "notify sender." BUT...I did enter ooo-oooo as their phone number and it went through. I did, however, have to call for verification. Maybe because this is the 1st time I used the on-line service. Thanks for all of your replys!

dr.13bc~ WU also told me when I called for confirmation, that I canNOT try to get any money back from my CC Company if I don't receive order. They didn't ask what it was for. They just asked if I knew the individual I was sending money to and if I was ordering something. Odd that they would be the ones telling me I couldn't get money back from CC Company. I think they would be the ones to tell me that but it went through and now I just sit, wait, and hope that I do get what I ordered.

Was it asking your phone number or the receivers phone number? Unless you do something different than I do there is not even a place on that web site to put the receivers phone number. Just Name, amount, city, country, and optionally state if it applies. It does ask your phone number though.

It was asking for the RECEIVER'S phone number and now I can't even PROVE it!! And no, I wasn't seeing things!! I went to WU and just made up a "dummy" transfer so I could post it for all to see and where it was ALWAYS asking for the RECEIVER'S number, it didn't show up!(?) Beats me. Maybe because I already made an earlier transfer? I don't know but like I said before, in order for me to get the transfer to go through, I put 000-0000 and it worked. I had already put MY number in where it was supposed to go and in an earlier post of mine, you can see that someone else asked the same question at the same OP. They, too, had commented on the fact that they could NOT transfer money w/out a telephone number.

I can see the validity in that. I thought about CC'ing through WU, however, I've elected to just research and then trust my instinct. I don't like the fact that I'd have to bring in a third party for mediation on a chargeback. Just too many people in the loop for that.
