Legal "Moonshine"
      #44407 - 12/14/02 04:14 PM

Yep..............had to be from the sticks of Alabama.

News story:

'New' Moonshine Hits Local Liquor-Store Shelves

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- When you hear the word moonshine, an elegant choice of drinks is not what comes to mind.

But moonshine is trading in its colorful past and going legit.

Conecuh Ridge Moonshine hit liquor-store shelves Friday in Alabama.

Made with corn mash, malt and yeast, Conecuh Ridge distributors call it a "sippin' whiskey, a masculine, gentlemen's drink."

Moonshine got a bad rap for being illegally made for years here in hills and hollows of Alabama. But with the vision of a man named Kenny May out of Union Springs, Alabama moonshine is now being sold in liquor stores.

Conecuh Ridge spokewoman, Mary Katherine Cabaniss said moonshine was branded the devil's drink when some used old radiators to distill the whiskey, sometimes causing "rot gut."

Many others refused to pay taxes on the liquor they made, instead making it underground illegally.

But Conecuh Ridge's 90-proof, amber-colored moonshine runs about $35 a bottle, is federally taxed and far from resembling the potent "white lightening" made in earlier days.

"It's got a great flavor and a great package," Cabaniss said. "The marketing behind it is excellent. It's an amber whiskey -- actually it's a bourbon. It's smooth. It's got a real caramel and vanilla flavor. A lot of people say it tastes like a single-malt scotch -- it's that good."

Cabaniss said their next move is to open a distillery in south Alabama, which they hope to do within two or three years.

I thought this was very interesting.

But it is still OUR problem and WE know that!
