This is insane
      #38441 - 11/05/02 07:46 AM

In a few months I am going to have insurance again and I am going to have a new pain in my upper back looked at and get an MRi when I can. My current back problem, herniated disc in the L5-S1 Lower Lumbar cannot be looked at for one full year, pre-existing.

The Dr I was going to kept telling me it was not a serious injury and I should not be in such pain. The replacement pain Management Dr I had before I lost my insurance told me he does not like to treat these things with "narcotic pain relivers", that they do not help. The regular Doc I was seeing said these things are addictive and I wil not prescribe them. When i got fed up with him for not helping wth anything, the other Doc told me he would give me cortizone shots in the office and work with that. He does not prescribe any "narcotic pain relievers".

Staying with my lower back here because, I don't know what's wrong with my upper back, I am in pain everydy and use the online OP's. it almost feels like either the herniation is either gotten worse or something is wrong because it REALLY kills me. My original pain management Doc was great before he moved. He understood and was very helpful. The replacement Doc like i said before Didn;t believe in giving "narcotic" pain medication. He would give me 40 5mg Norco and never stray from that. I told him that was taking 10mg, he said that was too much. i told him I have built up a tolerance that my last pain management Doc said he wanted to see if my tolerance did go up he would try Dilaudid or was more inclinded to try 20mg oxycontin. Well, he looked at me like I was nuts and said Oxycontin is overkill for my condition. I was like flabbergasted. it's about my tolerance not overkilling it.

I just cannot understand why the Dr's I had and the one pain management Dr I had kept saying I should not be in pain everyday and these things usually can give you pain one day then stop for 1 year? Are they nuts? I feel at times like my spinal cord is ready to split in half.

I just wish for once I could find a compasionate Dr in my area, which is NJ, and a Pain Management Dr that does not talk nonsense. I feel like when i get insuance I am doomed to suffer again...

Point that browser to one of the pain-patient advocacy group web pages & find a doctor who understands what you're gong through! One site i'd recommend would be http://www.painfoundation.org/ . Try the "find a doctor" link to see what docs in your area aren't afraid to treat your pain as it really shoud be treated. There are several other sites like this one so you may want to go to http://www.cityofhope.org/prc/web/rel_org.asp and look through the list for other sites that could be of help to you. Good luck, finding a *good* doctor who understands you and treats you well isn't easy during this insane War On Drugs where most doctors would rather underprescribe than risk bringing the wrath of the DEA upon them.

I'm really sorry for your pain and doctors can really suck. I have a serious sleepind disorder and it took my doc like 2.5 years to prescribe me halcion. Every other possible thing that they could think of, neurontin, trazadone (works, but neuro damages) hydroxyzine, ambien, seroquel before finally giving in and prescribing my triazolam (halcion).

My mother is a doc and she says they get suspicious and often uppity when you appear to know more than they do. But OF COURSE you know more about your own self than they do. Some docs have serious ego problems.

That point has been made before, and it is in the DEA info to docs about being able to spot drug abusers/seekers - that the person knows a lot about the condition....

I'm not trying to threadjack here Vastchoirs, I just really get so ACK when I read that over and over.... and I'm not mad at you toe for bringing it up... not killing the msgr...

Let's think about this one in a realistic and rational fashion shall we? Hmmm, I am in my 30's and am college educated. I have some post grad work under my belt.

I have had migraines for 20 years. I have seen regular doctors - GP's, Internal Medicine, and Family Practice... I have seen Neurologists. I have a family history of migraines, so I am not the only gal in the crowd having these things.

I actually have asked the doctors questions about my headaches over the past 20 years. And gosh - I remember the answers. I have read about the condition, done some research to see if I could get better.

Don't you think it would be irresponsible of me if I just paid no attention to anything but complaining?

If I walked into a doctor and said I have these headaches, been gettin em for bout 20 years now, and dunno a dang thing bout em. He would think I was goofy!

What kind of person with any sense of well being just lets their health decline without trying to learn why?!

end of vent.

thank you for your time.

you may now return to your regularly scheduled program.

See if there's a pain clinic near you:
http://www.pain.com/painclinics/searchclinics.cfm

There are understanding doctors who prescribe opiates and opioids.

My housemate went thru the same problem a few years back.
Her "gatekeeper" primary doc referred her to a doc who absolutely did not want her to have surgery. He put off tests and made her feel as though the problem was in her head, and if she kept whining someone would cut her open and her problems would be worse.
Well she finally had surgery. Her problems are not better.
But most of that is due to putting off surgery for so long that permanent nerve damage occured.
It is INSANE!
