Do postal services get suspicious ever?
      #34233 - 10/11/02 01:26 PM

If you got meds from UPS/Fedex and USPS alot would they ever get suspicious after a while????

I just get worried sometimes thinking that they'll think "Well, hmmm, another delivery to this person. wonder what there up to, maybe I should check up on this more"...etc..

I just get worried before a delivery sometimes....i live in a nosey town and people know others buisnesses alot and Best if kept off the board.....

Anything to ease my mind???....Can Fedex or USPS report to others if they get suspicious????

I guess a lot depends on the size of your Post Office if they get curious or even notice. The one thing I do hate is when I have to sign for a package. I would much rather it just be in my box and me pick it up after hours.

Well it wouldn't be a problem if you were getting your meds from a legitimate US operation... those are the only ones I know of who use private couriers (and one Mexican place too, I believe)

Anyhow.. it's all part of the risk when you play the game.

Who says you aren't buying stuff on ebay? Who says you actually have pills in the envelopes? I would start mentioning to the delivery guy...."I must stop buying these hats pins (or marbles) on ebay for my collection" or something stupid like that!
I really don't think a delivery person would ever "turn" you in. Isn't it against the law for the actual delivery person to open/peak/look what is in your package??????

Well, private courier services (UPS and FedEx) can open any package for any reason whatsoever ... they don't even need a reason. And if they find anything suspicious, they can call the cops who can do a field test and send samples to a lab for testing, and the whole search is legal. The 4th Amendment does not apply to FedEx or UPS ... or an airline that opens a checked or carry-on bag, for that matter. The 4th Amendment only applies to actions by the federal government, but this was later extended to also apply to state and local government agents.

USPS is very different. The 4th Amendment applies for domestic mail (and international incoming mail after it clears Customs), because USPS employees are all government agents. So USPS cannot open First Class, Priority Mail, or Express Mail without a search warrant based on probable cause. And mail carriers are required to keep customer information confidential. They can be fired for blabbing about someone's mail. They are not supposed to question you about your mail ... and you don't have to answer them, and you certainly have no obligation to tell them the truth if asked. (Hazardous material shipments excepted.)

Incoming mail going through Customs is a different story. Any "man, burden, or beast" can be inspected by U.S. Customs when it enters the country ... no reason required ... and the 4th Amendment applies to only a limted extent ... like supposedly protecting people from strip searches without any reason, and preventing Customs from doing strip searches and body cavity searches based simply on ethnic background or meeting a "profile." Customs needs to have an articulable reason based on facts to do invasive searches on a person. After lawsuits from people claiming invasaion of privacy after body-cavity searches based only on the color of a traveler's skin, they now have a policy to try to prevent their agents from doing it. But whether they follow it ... who knows?

(Also, recent changes in federal law allow Customs to search *outgoing* mail.)

People are different from baggage and packages. Baggage and packages have no expectation of privacy when entering the country ... and persons have only limited privacy protections from Customs (according to both law and policy).

The 4th Amendment protects us from "unreasonable searches and seizures" ... by the government. A postal inspector with a package that meets the "drug package profile" can put it aside for a drug sniff ... and, if the dog alerts, then they can get a search warrant to open it ... that's legal.

But an airline ticket or baggage agent (or an employee of a courier service) who just has a hunch about a bag or package can just open it without calling the cops. Any evidence found can be used in a court of law.

I have friends who work for UPS, FedEx AND the USPS, and all of them tell me that they deliver more meds each day than a person would ever believe. I mean, it's pretty obvious what's in that plastic-bag of an envelope that US docs often use to ship large bottles of pills. And, that rattling sound they make is pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain. Fortunately, i've been told that the vast majority of delivery people couldn't care less what you're receiving as long as it's not a danger to them when they deliver it. They have far too much to deliver already and taking time to harass people over products they very-well may have legit reasons for ordering just adds to their already too busy day. People in the package distributing/sorting rooms might be another story, but I wouldn't worry too much about the delivery guy.

EXACTLY - Can you imagine wanting to police any and all "suspicious- looking" packages that you may deliver in any given day as a mail carrier? Any envelope that rattles could be vitamin suppliments for all they care. When they get done with their shift at 4:30 or later they want to go home just like you or me. After walking how many miles a day to deliver everything they have is enough for anyone. I really doubt they would come back to the post office and think "Oh, yea, I should probably stay a little longer to fill out paperwork so the authorities can check this guy out 'cuz he gets a lot of overseas mail." Especially since any GOOD overseas pharmacy makes it appear to be nothing more than simple correspondence mail. In short - RELAX - They have better things to worry about - Trust me, I'm not new at this. Even though I don't have 10,000 posts under my belt, I've been ordering through the mail for at least 6 years. I've even had the local post office come to my door on Sunday(though not in uniform) to deliver Tramadol from Thialand on 2 seperate occasions. Never a problem. I live in a town with a population under 27000, which is quite a bit smaller than yours.

In a related matter...my girlfriend worked as a temp for a UPS contractor and the big gossip had to do with several of their truck preloaders being investigated and terminated for stealing sched lll meds being shipped. I guess when you start to see the same shipper and customer names and hear the give-away rattle of pills in a bottle you would be curious. I am sure it goes on with all the big freight/package couriers and even the airlines that handle cargo/freight. With so many frieght comoanies and even airlines using 3rd party contractor services to handle such tasks I guess it is inevitable...as they say...you get what you pay for!

Hi Trampy,
No truer words ever spoken! I remember the day I found out private carriers could open pkgs without a warrant.Amazing!
In my day, postal employees were trained to be aware of possible lethal/chemical/hazardous materials being shipped thru the USPS system and educated on how to react properly and quickly if one came across a suspicious pkg of this type, how to contact HazMat,evacuate the building(they hate that)LOL! and etc... Never would one even consider discussing a carriers customers or anyone in the MPC's.
Snail mail may be slower, but in the long run,you have more protected rights using them.Good Post.
J.
