Buying meds during cruise. Advise needed please.
      #236218 - 03/09/05 08:11 AM

At the end of the month I will be going on a cruise. The last cruise I went on I bought meds in Belize with no problem, but this one is going Western Caribbean, and I wanted to get some input as to the best place to purchase meds. I will be visiting Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Ochos Rios, Jamaica, and Cozumel, Mexico. The obvious choice to me is Mexico, but I was curious as to some people's experiences and advice on getting the meds back into the country as I want to purchase Soma, Xanax, and maybe some Ambien. Also, when responding, can you please tell me the best pharmacy to go to while I'm there. Any information that you can give will be greatly appreciated.

I went to a place in Cozumel I would recommend. It is a one story yellow building about 3-4 blocks right behind the main square. Just a doctor who was immediately ready to prescribe valium/xanex, etc. After a little prodding, he gave me a narcotic for my back (though it was fairly week).

I took the same cruise two years ago, and would agree that Cozumel is your best bet. There are two places that I saw cruise ships docked - one is about 2 miles out of town and the other is visible from the main avenue that runs along the ocean (looks a lot like the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta). We were on Royal Caribbean so we were docked outside of town, but the cab ride is about $2.00 - there's a big duty-free store there; good for cosmetics, perfumes and booze.

I was a little hesitant to go too far off the "big" streets because I went into town on my own, but there is a farmacia at the cruise ship "center". Was able to buy factory sealed Soma (Somacid) 120 ct. for about $45.00. Asked for Ambien 10 mg, at first they said they didn't have it but then it was about $1 a pill, which is pretty much what it costs here.

My best advice would be to leave the bottle sealed and pack it deeply in your suitcase. When you get back into Miami, there are SO many suitcases coming off those ships, that I didn't see anyone have them checked. Carry-on bags, a percentage were checked, but I didn't see any suitcases looked at.

If you have an old pill bottle that was prescribed to you use that. Even if you have to create an new label on the computer.
