A doctor licensed in five states, including New York, is accused of selling prescription drugs over the Internet. He has been arrested in a sting involving the Colonie police.

Dr. David Stephenson, 44, of Rome, N.Y. allegedly set up two Web sites where he sold a plethora of prescription drugs, except he offered them without a prescription.

Painkillers, Ritalin, anti-depressants and the date rape drug – GHB – were all available through the convenience of your own computer, according to police.

"This is a stack of approximately 50 e-mail addresses per page, approximately 300 pages, of e-mail addresses that the good doctor corresponded with,” Colonie Police Chief Steven Heider said at a news conference Friday.

Authorities noticed three months ago Stephenson was getting more drugs than what's considered normal from pharmaceuticals. Police realized Stephenson had set up shop online, selling prescription drugs to customers without a prescription.

"He didn't have a practice. He wasn't seeing patients. You couldn't even call these patients. You have to call them drug customers," explained Michael Moffett of the state Department of Health.

Customers included undercover police from Colonie, who made several successful purchases and on Thursday moved in. Police raided Stephenson's home, seizing computers and paper records. They also found packages marked for as far away as Tokyo.

“The information superhighway opens the merchandising up on sites like eBay and Amazon.com. In this case it was Meds2go or DocStat were the two Web sites. Anybody who went on those Web sites had access to him,” Heider said.

Stephenson was arraigned Friday on four charges of criminal sale of a controlled substance.


Customers who purchased drugs from him could also face charges.

Stephenson's sites have been shut down.

He is currently in the Albany County Jail without bail.

Well, I guess it was a matter of time. The funny thing about this site was you could see the special orders from others (no names, only initials) and there would be 10 bottles of hydro on an order (1000 pills). This was a little like you know who but on a smaller scale but having Sch II meds.

Yikes, do I feel for those with the huge orders. Do you really think they could come after these folks? I guess if they were clearly buying more than for personal use, then maybe.

I'd say its almost certain the larger order customers will get visits. You really gotta wonder about the wisdom of ordering 1000 hydrocodone pills at a time!

Also, the fact that he was selling GHB... I bet that played a huge role in his bust. Thats just not something the authorities are going to ignore. I'm sure those customers will get visits as well.

Seems like he was doing a lot of steroid biz, too. Hmmm, let's see, GHB+Steroids+ Huge orders= one screwed doctor.

Please, don't everyone get into a panic and turn paranoid on us (unless it was YOU buying the above) because this guy is definitely the exception, not the rule. Let this guy be the sacrificial lamb for LE's witch hunt (sorry for the mixed metaphors) that keeps the locals patting each other's backs and high-fiving.

Also, it seems he was not using a pharmacy, which requires a prescription to fill, just filling orders out of his house.

Like the wildebeest herd, the slowest and dumbest get caught so the rest can survive.

I don't think anyone would have anything to be too worried about if they had ordered from this guy in a *normal* quantity. But I agree if you were stoopid enough to order 1K then you should get out the milk and cookies and prepare for a visit from LE.

I dunno... I'd say if you ordered GHB you should be cleaning house, no matter how little you got. Same for any "high profile" drugs. A few hydros, some diazepam, OK maybe... but people ordering quantity and/or schedule I drugs from this place are probably getting a visit.
