Can someone tell me why some threads (even ones that have been there awhile) suddenly disappear? And why?

Threads disappear at the sometimes mysterious discretion of the mods and Admin.
Often it's obvious why, like when you see a thread will devolve into a flame war and then disappear without a trace, good posts and bad. There doesn't seem to be a mechanism for deleting a few selectied, presumably offensive posts from an otherwise on-topic thread, the whole thing just goes in the trash.
Threads that duplicate the topic from an existing thread in the same forum will eventually be merged into one thread. This seems to take quite a while to happen, while the multiple mexrx threads churn happily along, side by side. Lots of posts disappear when threads are merged.
Threads sometimes disappear because they are in the wrong forum (a mexrx discussion in the domestic section for example). Instead of moving it to the right forum, an active thread in the wrong forum will often just get the axe.
Also there does seem to be a sort-of-secret list of forbidden topics; accidentaly posting about one of these guarantees thread deletion. Some of these topics you can guess by which words and names the autocensor removes when you are posting or sending PM's..no dirty words or discussing banned former DB members, for example! Recreational drug use, and the names of other web site message boards similar to this one, seem to be two of the main forbidden discussions.
Why are some threads deleted? Sometimes it's just a mystery. 99 percent of the time you will not get an explanation from the mod responsible for deleting a thread, even if you ask nicely.
Hope this helps

On this topic - this morning at 8:30am, I posted a question asking if anyone else had gotten a strange PM. I posted because the PM suggested questionable activity from a person who had just registered and had yet to post in the open forums. I wanted to konw if this was an occurrence for many people, or if I was just getting picked on, because I have no published or unpublished experience with what i was being asked. And I check the thread for responses a couple of minutes ago, and it's gone. Everythign is gone. I don't know if someone posted a questionable response, but what I wrote was certainly within the rules. My question is deleted, and there is a thread out there dealing with someone trying to pass an old prescription bottle as a current prescription and people eluding to changing the dates and what not. Very inconsistent.

btw you should be able to find deleted posts via google, unless they got deleted before google cached them.

I'd ask the mods for an explanation, dmg. I read your post, saw nothing objectionable, and responded, certainly nothing objectionable there either.

What makes it doubly frustrating is that there often seemse to be absolutely no reason for a thread to be deleted. And most of the time nobody in a position to offer an explanation ever thinks it's necessary!
It might be clear to the mods and Admin that the thread is in the wrong forum, or discusses inappropriate topics, or duplicates an existing thread. But if none of us knows that, we are left wondering what we did wrong!
Everybody who has ever posted on DB has had posts mysteriously disappear. Believe me, nobody is being singled out!
In the long run, often I think the lack of a logical explanation is sometimes more annoying than the disappearance of the thread in the first place!

That and the fun conspiracy theory threads.

dmg, if you are referring to a PM re a "neighbor to the north", I got one, too, yesterday. And as you can see, I rarely post, & never on that topic, so I guess the person was just spamming at least part of the member list, hoping for a hit.

Interesting stuff 99, I never heard about autosensor. What's with that? Is it on vip side also? I remember seeing some posts deleted by Db, and some moved, but like some of you said, some just fanish for no reason.

That you for your participation and for the great responses made in this thread.
There is a very logical explanation and there is no real mistery. The moderators are just doing what they think is best to enforce our rules.
The moderators can not read all posts and they rely on members pressing the "Notify Moderator Button". The members alerting the mods have a strong saying in what gets removed...
Sometimes members ask "why was my post removed and a very similar one was left on the board?". Both posts may deserve to go but maybe we were only alerted about one of them.
