I hope it's ok to bump this old thread, as I find it rather interesting...

Indeed it's sad that we have to take such steps to protect ourselves from having our legal meds stolen. I know that I have been riped off a few times in the past, and I can NEVER leave anything stronger than a T#3 in the bathroom these days.

I wanted to share some light on places I have got my meds stolen from in the past. I was keeping my hydro in a draw with my underwear and socks. I was shocked to learn one day that a person I let in the house for less than ten minutes actually managed to find my meds in the drawer underneath my cloths and stole them! Another time (I suspect the same teen was involved) a person actually managed to find my pain meds that were in the bottom of a large bottle of generic vitamins! They actually managed to take the entire bottle and get out with them.

These days I dont trust anyone around my meds, I even keep an eye on family members. I always keep my meds in the prescription bottle they came in (to be 100% legal) but I now keep them in rooms OTHER than a bedroom or bathroom... often above or below eyesite level. Its a pitty that we have to protect ourselves with such means from who is often within our own family. Also, word to the wise for those that pay the local kids to mow the yard or shovel the snow out of the driveway- Be carfull when you let them inside to use the bathroom. (best not too)

Cheers.

I've taken to hiding small groups of pills in various locations around the house. My theory revolves around loss diversification. If someone with larcenious intent is over, if they search when I'm not aware, the most they'll find is a group of 6-8 pills.

As for specific places, I like coat pockets, the bottom of jars, on the top shelf in the kitchen cabinets, the toe of a seldom used pair of shoes, etc etc.

I've always wondered at the irony of this subject here and on other boards. Most of us seem to have chronic pain, need pain meds, defend the OPs as being so legit, yet worry about hiding meds and LE checking out the boards. Hmmmmmm...

And to respond to the topic, I don't hide any. I have my husband give them to me. The little suckers are like peanuts, hard to stop at just one.

that would be pretty hilarious, especially if it was a roommate that was "pilfering".

I've had Xanax taken by a friend who was RX'd an insane amount. I was just confused by that.

On another note, if you have ANY service people at your house, (plumbers, cable, carpet, whatever) make sure to HIDE EVERYTHING. I work with a guy who told me he used to steal pills from every carpet laying job he did.

LOL man, i hate pill theifs...
i suffer from a bad back and have a business where i am stooped over from about 12 hours at a time and working machinery, but on ly a few times a month so i dont need pain releif everyday, but when i do need it it is in DIRE need! when i do start eating them it IS hard to stop at just a few... and since i have kids in the house i do have to hide them, so i put them somewhere thats a pain to get to in the basement downstairs out of reach by far and definately out of sight...
Im convinced that no matter how hard someone looked they could NEVER find them.... LOL

I have replaced the bottle with generic tylenol on occasion when I noticed my own husband was taking my pain meds, and he has no pain, and he still takes the tylenol as the generic version that I buy looks just like a gerneric 5mg Vicodin, then I use one of my older bottles or even visa versa,(tylenol in the old bottle) and put it my closet in my boots, or like my Mom told me put the bottle in a zip lock bag abd hide them in the kitty litter container,LOL she is a pip.

Wow, I guess I never realized how many people will rummage through your house looking for pills. HOW RUDE!! I keep mine in the dresser drawer, don't have company over very often that actually goes upstairs to my room. Hubby could care less about what's in my drawers. (the dresser ones at least)

I guess everyone has a different situation at their home. My pain medication goes straight to the medicine cabinet in the bathroom - a few go in an old refill bottle in my briefcase for work.

Yup, evrybody has different situations at home that is for sure, it is ashame that some have to hide meds from thier own family, or even just friends that visit. My husbands friend comes over everyday and since he also knows I suffer, he is constantly asking me if I have an extra pain med for him, of course I say NO. He had a motorcycle accident years ago and broke his back in 3 places, so I say find a doctor, and I told him that he could get meds even an NROP on the web, as I know he buys off the streeet the hydro's at 5 bucks a pop, but he says no I can them for 5 dollars eack when I need them, he must be made of $ or something, maybe he has a money tree in his yard, boy I want one of those.

I put my am & pm meds in my bathrobe pocket, i leave the rest locked in my truck (with an alarm system on). That way, i have enough at home and enough for the daytime as well. When I receive large quantities of several meds though, i can get very creative since I don't want to be driving around with these in my vehicle in case I get pulled over for a minor traffic violaton (i've never had a ticket in my life). Old coat pockets work, socks, and for females any "feminine product" box works great - I doubt any husband wants to look in there

I'm lucky in that I do live alone in an apartment (well, the wabbit doesn't count, she wouldn't steal my meds! ). My apartment is small and crammed to the figurative gills with my books, toys, model kits, electronics, and whatnot. I'm not the best housekeeper either!! So I think anyone who might want to swipe something from me might be a bit overwhelmed as to where to start looking.

That said, there is one person from whom I have to hide my meds; a fellow expat and co-worker who sucks back painkillers like candy. This person, once trusted, has swiped meds from me on more than one occasion, taking advantage of the casual atmosphere at work to rifle through my purse. Now, my meds are locked, with my purse, in my file cabinet, to which I have the only key.

At home I don't hide my meds but I do split them up. Some stay in my purse as I mentioned; some go into a Baby Cinnamon tin (about the same size as an old-fashioned aspirin tin) that stays in the bottom drawer of my china cabinet. Some get hidden in my paint booth (well wrapped, of course), hidden behind the DVD player, hidden in the base of one of my finished models, etc.

When I'm travelling, my meds stay on my person, though I have at times used a room safe. I usually keep them in a cute little padded zippered pouch (it feels like a tissue pack, or more likely a folded sanitary napkin; it's about the right size), and have a decoy bottle of aspirin along with.

As I said, I don't need to hide my meds at home but reading this thread, I've come up with a pretty ideal place to hide them at home. My bookshelves are deep, and divided in half. On both the top and bottom halves, are sliding sections that roll two-thirds of the width of the whole shelf. The backs of the sliding shelves are indented. It would be easy to duct tape or even thumbtack a flat pack of meds behind there. It literally couldn't be seen at all (there's no way to get your head in there), wouldn't interfere with the sliding sections' movement, and provided the pack was carefully assembled, there would be no rattle or other indication that it was there.

Also a good place for me is above the hood on my stove there are double cabinets way up high next to the ceiling, which is where I keep my flour and corn mean, cooking oil.etc..bigger items, the front of the cabinet has a tall lip on it so you can see anything...i either lie the bottle down on its side or hide it behind the flower...even a tall man would have to stand on a chair to get to these...so I get my daily dose out in the am. carry them in my pocket or somewhere closeby...and leave the big bottle up out of reach.Oh I move them and have several other little places..but that one has worked best for me!

I love this thread! People are so clever! Now i know what too do with the leftover kitty litter! ( my kitty thread)

Actually, I don't really need to hide anything at home, but when I travel to india (I leave in 10 days!) i have a small bag for meds & my passport with zippers that meet, once I get past customs i lock this bag with small padlock thru the zippers so no children poison themselves, no nosy relative ask questions about meds, but mostly so no relative ever sees my passport!!!!! They think i'm the same age as my husband, and if they found out the truth that i'm older the sacred cow dung would hit the fan!!

I agree with your statement that guys won't want to look in women's feminine products. I've had a hysterectomy so there aren't any tampon boxes lying around here! I guess I could go down and buy a box of that Monistat 7 stuff...the yeast infection medicine. LOL....No-Way is a guy gonna go near THAT box!!!!!

Fun thread!

Be careful where you hide your medication!

Yesterday, my friend phoned and said that she was coming over to visit. She has two toddlers and since I live alone my home is hardly “childproof”. I ran around the house and picked up all the small articles that I thought they could possibly choke on. I keep my medication on my nightstand and was looking for a place to stash it. I decided to put it in my car. I went outside and while walking around my car I noticed a round pipe with a hole in it by the rear bumper. I took the lid off my prescription bottle and “bingo” it fit the hole perfectly! The next morning I went out and started my car to let it warm up. A few minutes later I heard what I thought was a gunshot. I went outside to see what it was and noticed my car had stopped running. As I walked around the car to restart it I saw that my prescription cap was missing off of the pipe. I turned to see if anyone was around when I noticed little blue spots on my neighbor’s house. I walked across the street and sure enough about 100 little blue spots with “Watson 540” on them.

I live in an apartment where the maintenance staff has keys and enters for repair reasons. You just never know when someone will nose around when you are not home ... so I usually put the bottle in the corner of my waterbed, between the mattress and liner. It ends being made up in the bed sheets and blanket and is non detectable.

Of course, after this post, I will have to move them! LOL!
