Traveling with medications
      #221396 - 02/02/05 08:04 PM

I will be taking a Greyhound bus trip. Can I put my pills in a pill box so I can remember which ones to take for each day? I have several health problems and take a number of pills. I seem to remember watching cops before or something that said you have to have your pills in the bottles or something like that.

Also, is it safe to travel with meds from a no records op? I thought about going the records route for this trip and the rest of my hydros. Is it okay to travel with no rec hydros? Is it safe to travel with rec hydros?

I haven’t rode a Greyhound bus in several years. I remember one time there was a DEA walk through, but only once. What is the best advice these days?

It's generally illegal to carry controlled substances outside of the pharmacy bottle that they came in.

Would a no rec bottle work? Would a rec bottle work?

StickyRice, Trampy has stated the bottom line. I recently traveled to the Caribbean via air and kept my anxiety medication in my pocket. It was obviously screened at the security checks with the rest of my carry on belongings and yes it was in a prescription bottle but my point is no one scrutinized it. No one broke out a drug chart to compare the medication in the bottle. I cannot advise you what to do but I thought that if I shared this story with you it might help you with you decision.

Any bottle with your name, the pharmacy name, doctor's name, etc. is okay, but I would not use a bottle from a NROP that is missing that information. You could put your meds in the other container, but I would take the original bottles along just to be safe. Are they doing passenger screening and bag checks on buses now? Boy, times have changed, haven't they?

on my last flight i had to take off my jacket, shoes and when i took my two scripts out of my pocket and put them in the box (before the detector) the guard said i dont want to see those put those away, so i did.

they never check the labels and they wouldnt know anyways what is what. not unless they wanted to harass you and they had a drug agent with them. normal people dont know what alprazolam is or what it looks like.

now customs is a different ballgame.

good luck

As long as you're not the bus driver, I find it hard to imagine that you'd ever have to prove what all the pills are in an unmarked pill container. I fly domestically on a regular basis and no one cares about pills. I have a 7 day container with a few vitamins as well as prescription meds. I do believe there is a law somewhere that controlled substances need to be in their prescription bottle. I guess if I get in some kind of trouble while travelling, controlled substances not in original container would be one more of my problems. I'll risk it, as it's so much easier to have all my meds in the travelling 7 day container. My biggest concern is head lice on the airplane pillows.

Hope you have a fun holiday.

I've traveled to China twice and to the Carribean with RX Percocet IN their original bottles that I keep in my purse. Never a problem.

Head lice from airline pillows? Yikes! Last time I rode a bus I saw some pretty pathetic life forms, hate to think what's on THOSE pillows!

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it ay all. Relax and have a nice trip. Bring your own pillow.

I carry a copy of my medical records and if you have a local Dr get a traveling letter from them, they understand.

Greyhound does not check your bags. They could really care less. You have nothing to worry about. If it makes you feel better I would bring along the bottles like the others said.

I recently went to Florida and put my rx in my pocketbook and no one said a thing to me. It went through the detector and all was good. They are not looking at your rx bottles, they are looking for weapons.
