Still hurting need help
      #214184 - 01/11/05 12:53 AM

I was wondering how I go about asking my doc for Oxy or anything to treat my pain better than codeine, without asking him up front for them. I don't want to sound like I am desperate to him but I am. The Tylenol #3's I get for my knee pain just does not do the job, if I say to him I need something stronger than codeine because it's not work what do you think he would prescribe without uping the codeine because it seems like it just does not work anymore.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried 800 of Advil along with up to 60/650 of codeine/Tylenol (Tylenol #4), four times a day? Sure beats getting hooked on Oxycontin...

No I have not tried that but I have taken up to 120mg to 160mg of codeine and still have pain, not sure what to do, I am sure I will not get hooked on Oxy it's for my pain not for rec use. Anyone else had the same experiences about asking there doc for something stronger? Or my same situation, thanks for the post Acid

You'll probably be hard-pressed to find a doctor to prescribe oxy for a knee injury. Most would rather operate and FIX the problem rather then risk an addiction that could be worse than the original problem. IMO, I think your chances are slim...

If what you want is really more pain relief and not specifically oxy, sit down and talk to your doctor. Tell him how you've responded to the medication you've been on so far and what level of pain that you are still experiencing. Work with him to come up with a solution. Simply ask him if Oxy could be something to try. There could be other things to try that you haven't considered, such as things similar to Acid's suggestion. Oxy is a very powerful drug and it doesn't require recreational use to become addicted. It would be unfortunate to trade one problem for another, regardless of the means it took to get there.

I have to agree with the Goddess, you need to sit down and talk to your doctor about the pain level your having and how the meds work or don't work for you. If you go straight to asking for Oxy I believe your going to wind up with nothing. There are so many other drugs in the spectrum from a ty3 to Oxy that asking for these will mark you as a drug seeker and you don't want that at all. Maybe a ty4 or some hydrocodone will work better for your knee problems.Good Luck!!!

Some people (like me) just don't respond to codiene. I agree not to ask for oxy. Just tell your doctor that the tylenol 3s are not working for you and see what happens. I remember one time after I had had my urethra dialated my urologist originally gave my T3s. I called the office crying to the nurse that they weren't working at all and they called in a script for hydro which worked soooo much better!

Iam willing to bet that a jump up to Norco ,which are better then vicodin cause they have less tylenol an 10mg/325 of the hydro in them ,they also have another pill of the simular strenght called Lortabs 10/500 ! One of those would be like taking 3 of the codiene #3 ! You are much more likley to get your Dr. to perscribe those then oxycotins. There is a big stigma attached to oxys , and stories of Doctors being harassed by DEA , who perscribe oxys ! I was taking pain pills daily ,however I didnt get into a addiction problem till I started taking oxy's , and it took me to a much higher opiate tolerance. After taking the oxy's for a few months I could take a handful of vicodins and they would do nothing for my pain anymore. Now if your pain and tolerance is to a level that oxys are the only thing that will work for you ,then you have to weigh the dependance issuse against the level of pain releif you need. I dont think anyone should suffer , and if oxys are what it takes then go for it !

i dont think oxys are your best bet it looks like your doc. may be a little shy when it comes to handing out scripts for narc. i thought the drug of choice these days were hydro from doctors? i get a script for oxy.and i can tell you that you have to use every pain relever in the book before they will write them it took me almost a year in pain mang. before they started writing them for me. it went from hydro&shots to sch.11 like percs and shots to other long acting drugs and shots so good luck i think your next step would be hydro and shots i dont think a knee proplem would ever qualify by its self for any long acting pain med

I doubt very seriuosly you will get hooked on oxy, like you said you take it for pain, not rec use. I have been in your shoes, I was taking percocet for pain and it no longer was effect,so I asked if I could try oxy..My dr. started me with 40mg, then 80mg..but oxy did not give me the relief it was suppose to, so I asked him to change me to another type and he put me on methadone. It has been a wonderful medicine for me and I can enjoy my life a little more now. I can't see why your dr.would have a problem with helping you get out of pain. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the responces, I am going to go in the next few days and just tell him that the codeine is not working for me and can I try something stronger to see if it will help. I will post after to let you know what he gave me a script for. I hope he will try me on hydro since it's what most people said here. BTW how much hydro would you need to take to equal 120mg of codeine? what is the ratio for hydro to codeine to Oxy, thanks again

Sounds to me like you need percocet.....alternatively Norco 10mg......even Vicodin 7.7/750 would be better than tylnole, which I personally think is useless for real pain.

good point on the codeine. for alot of people it just sucks. im a very experienced opiate user including heroin since 1997. right now i take norco's and valiums on the reg. some OC here and there. methadone every once in a while. yeah yeah i know you dont have to tell me. anyway, id go for hydro moreso than the OC. alot easier to get and works alot better at least for me. pure codeine which is natural as opposed to OC which is synthezied from codeine is just plain weak. i can take 500 mgs and not feel [censored]. i take about 120 mgs of hydro a day on a "average" pain day. i do have real legit pain now. just sucks that my previous opiate addiction which was very very serious btw screwed me up and makes it that much harder. methadone DOES work very well for pain but i dont reccomend it. its haaaaaaard to get off. trust me. very hard. but hey, everyone is diff. ive never posted before but ive been looking at this site for a while and i just wanna say its obvious when people act like they need something for pain relief when they are clearly addicts. come on now. we can see right through you. just be honest. no one is going to flame you. after a couple weeks its not really your fault when you become addicted. just dont try to lie about it and say [censored] like "oh i dont want to get addicted im so afraid of that i really really do need it for pain blah blah." just say something like "i have alot of pain etc etc and im dopesick too cause i take so much [censored]" instead of trying to act all high and mighty. sorry if im outta line but i havent posted and i see alot of this [censored]. but yeah, back to the topic...... try for the norco 10/325's and if you have muscle pain try to add in some valiums. great combo. syngersim. 1 + 1 = 3. hope this helps

personally, im allergic to codeine. my Dr put me on Oxycontin about 4 years ago or so,3x80mg name brand pills a day with 5mg IR for breakthru. im lucky if i take 1 80 and 1 5IR a day ( but have had days i have to take 3-4....LOL). they end up just sitting here or getting flushed. hope your Dr can help ya out with a skrypt. dont know where your located, but if youll PM me, i can give u the name of a good pain managment Dr. in california that will perscribe Oxy for you without fear of being critisized.

good luck, and i hope you get better and your Dr. helps you out.

I went yesterday and I did not see my regular doc he was not in, so I seen this other guy, he did not listen to me and he gave me Torodol 10mg Can anyone tell me how Torodol is with pain and how good it works. So after that I was upset not knowing what Torodol was so I went to a different doctors office on my way home, and told him codeine doesn ot work for me and he gave me Percocet 5/325 to start to see how it is. I am glad I went to the second doc he listen to me more. But my question is on the Torodol how has it worked for anyone, thanks

Toradol is a non-narcotic pain reliever...it is not codeine. It worked well for me post surgical pain after I had my gallbladder out & the Demerol did not work for my pain..it just made me nuts...They give it for acute pain and it is not supposed to be used for more than 2 weeks because of the effects on the body it has. It is not habit forming.

Hmmmmm, maybe seven years ago...getting old, I forget....
Down in Puerto Vallarta, I hurt myself (again, what a surprise; now I have learned to eyeball every situation and assess any possible unmasking of my clumsiness,) and I was given Toradol. It does work. It will not act the same way as other meds. It does work, though.
This is the second time I see Percodans mentioned. I am really amazed. I thought those little guys were so reviled they were lanquishing somewhere. As a matter of fact, drugstores do keep fresh supplies and replace old meds very studiously, so your meds are good. If I saw Percodan on ebay, I would worry. I am pretty sure it is sitting there not prescribed most of the time. (Triplicate, Sch II, brings attention to doc writing for it.)

I wish you relief as soon as possible!

I also would say probably Lortab 10 or Norco is your best bet for your problem also I use a patch called Lidoderm its 5% lidocaine and it numbs the area placed on for 12 hrs. you wear it 12 on and 12 off, they are great for anything from arthritis to surgical insicions. (i use them for any areas of pain and they are great.) Both are C3's and asking for both shouldnt be a problem, may even help your case. Just asking for a narcotic alone sometimes raises suspicions but asking for that patch as well, shows you have a specific need....
Good Luck
