Lomotil -an antidiarrheal med -that contains a Narocotic
      #209805 - 12/23/04 04:06 PM

Would someone please be so kind as to share some basic info abut the antidiarrheal drug Lomotil? I was prescribed this yesterday, and I just read that it contains Diphenoxylate HCl which (by it's self) is a Schedule II narcotic related to Demerol (meperidine), but when combined with tatropine sulfate it is a Scedule V narcotic. Wow, I never thought something as simple as an an antidiarrheal med would be anything of this nature.

Does anyone actually abuse this stuff? More importantly, I must ask if anyone has suffered any serious reactions to the atropine combined in it to lessen abuse of the product. From what I have read; atropine can cause very very bad side effects, and Im rather concerened it's something I dont really need to be taken at all. In fact, Im almost ready to get something over the counter instead.

Thanks.

I've used lomotil in the past for its intended use. The ones I was prescribed were the smallest pills I've ever seen. One of them worked well as an AD. I THINK that one pill contains a trace amount of Diphenoxylate HCI. You'd probably have to take a hundred lomotil's to have enough Diphenoxylate HCI in you to make a difference in how you felt. One things for sure if you take a bunch of lomotils you won't be using the can for days. I kind of believe in the saying "never say never" but I'd find it hard to believe people were abusing lomotil. Anyway's if you need a highly effective AD lomotil is a life saver.

The sub-therapeutic dose of atropine is added to Lomotil to discourage abuse, because it will cause some nasty side effects *only* if you try to take enough diphenoxylate to get narcotic effects. It's not an issue if you use the prescribed dosage to control diarrhea.

Peace,
Jack

Actually, I was prescribed this once and since I "really needed" it urgently, for the prescribed reason I took four at once and went to bed. I did not realize that it was a narcotic or that Atropine could be a nasty thing.

Anyway, after taking four and going to bed, I woke up feeling great. Relaxed and quite comfortable. Then I read up on the med and found out why I felt so good. I've never taken more than 4 at once, and would not suggest anyone else try it. I'm not sure exactly what atropine does, but it does do something because my pupils got huge, but that is the only thing I saw happen. Again though I wasn't trying to get high, just head off a major stomache issue.

yeah, that's kind of a little over the top for that. My gastrointrologist t, I have IBS, told me to just take plain ol immodiumad...He said you can't OD on it and you can take alot at a time. I take 4 every morning. that works for me. And it is derived from the codeine products anyway........

I'll never forget the day I walked into my local Walgreens. I wasn't sure if Lomotil was one of those "under the counter" over the counter meds, so I asked the pharmacist, who knows me from my hydro prescriptions. She shot me a glare and she said "Great, now your looking to abuse diarreha medicine. Why don't you just go get some Immodium off the shelf." Wide-eyed in shock, I shot back, "uh...no thanks, I'm done with Walgreens and I'm going to tell your corporate offices why." Walgreens IS truly evil.

Thats funny, yet very uncalled for. I would not boycott Walgreens entire business, but I would advoid that pharmacist ('might even tell others).

UPDATE:

I received an email from an old friend of mine today that had a story of someone that acidentially took too many of these pills. He claims his friend took somewhere between 6-10 Lomotil pills one night due to the fact he was drinking and wasnt making smart decisions. The report is that they made him feel very bad... He had nightmares all night long, nerves were shot to the point that the room was spining, and he got very dehydrayted to the point he suffered an all day long intense sinus headache.

So, on the surface of it... I cant understand how anyone could abuse this product to get high on it. It seems to be one of those drugs that should not be sceduled as it currently is.

Peace.
