calling all women!!!
      #209217 - 12/21/04 10:51 AM

i really dont know where else to ask...i've checked online till my eyes hurt & cant find any answers. i am 27 and have been diagnosed by my obgyn with secondary amenorrhea (not having periods) due to stress. back on nov. 9th, my doc prescribed progesterone to be taken orally at night for 12 days (this was completed on nov 20th). he told me that after finishing this prescription i should get my period within a few days. when i didnt, i called & was told to give it another week....still nothing. then they told me to give it a few more weeks....still nothing. well now it's been a month since i finished the prescription & guess what...STILL NOTHING!! so i called again & now they're telling me to give it till around valentines day & then we'll do the same prescription again & hope it works this time......does this sound fishy to anyone else??? i mean, i would think if this prescription didnt produce the desired results, that they would either increase the dosage or try another drug, instead of telling me to keep waiting. and also, if this drug didnt work the first time, what makes them think it will work in febuary?? any help or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated, cuz it just doesnt seem right to me. thanks for any responses!

Goodness I wish I had your condition. I am having periods every 3 weeks. No fun at all. When I was younger, stress would also cause me to go months without a period. I am not sure why. I didn't consult a doc as I knew he would put me on hormones, which I did not want. I never have been on the pill. Now that I am older, 42, I have periods like clockwork and actually have more stress now. I would think if you are doing hormone therapy such as taking the pill, that is what my friends in your situation do, it should work. If not, they may need to increase the dosage. If you are scared it is a problem, by all means have it checked out by getting bloodwork and a full exam. Maybe consider an ultrasound. It could be cysts or something to that effect. That would fool your body into thinking you are pregnant also.

I've had 2 endometrial biopsys! (infertility treatment) They were all done under concious sedation (versed) I don't remember a thing & apparently the medication made it not hurt. My husband was in the room & said I didn't wimper too much. Under no circumstances let them do this to you without anesthesia!
Are you very thin and or athletic? This can cause lack of periods, but seeing as you just had a baby I doubt you are out there training for the Olympics!(female athletes and anorexics often stop menstuating)
Maybe you should get a second opinion. What kind of Doc are you seeing? This problem should be in the hands of an OBGYN at least. Are you hoping to have more children? This could be a serious problem if you are. I'd even look into seeing a reproductive endocrinologist/infertility specialist. Don't waste your time with general practicioners.
PM me if you wish, I've been thru 5 yrs of infertility treatment & can give you all sorts of links for info. Not that I'm saying that infertility is your problem, but just in case.... www.resolve.org is a good place to start.
Best wishes, I hope it all works itself out soon.
